THE MEDICAL CONGRESS,
A SPECIAL SERMON IN UNION CHURCH. On Sunday morning the minister, Rey. C. H. Hickling, preached a sermon having in view the Medical Congress. He took his text from St. Matthew (1x-12) “Jesus said, The that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick." The preacher said that according to Physiology the heart anat ches a minute rest at the point of oscillation. Bo Jesus in His throbbing life would seem to find relief in these sayings by the way, these parentheses; but He comes out of these brackets mighty, definite and gracious. -Through the utterance of this truism we have really a clue to the power of Jesus with His contemporaries. And that power needs accounting for. Jesus possessed in a unique way Love's perception, that is, sympathy. Yet this was far removed from weakness. Again and again He dared to apply the right remedy, to offer the thing needed but not wanted. There is nothing in mare sublime than the demeanour of Jesus toward His bewildered Galilean followers Gethsemane. On the other hand there is

When the New Testament was written in the flesh and blood of the Son of God Himself, the Iman that spoke to us was Emmanuel, God with us. A man who could stoop like a mother and look like a god is enough. When I think of the Medical Profession I think of skilled perception, applied experience and a ministry of compassion. They that are sick need a physician; Jesus declared. This need is persistent and probably will always continue. I am not unmindful of the power of prayer. Take an example. A wife has been declared incurable. The latnily is gathered round the deathbed, The husband retires to a corner of the room and in an agony of prayer sought God's help. His wife's recovery dated from that moment. The doctor said it was a resurrec tion and he could not understand it. There are many such cases well authenticated. But on the other hand, many of God's most trustful children have suffered bodily pain and infirmity for many years. In Faul we have man vested with extraordinary heal ing power, but was delighted to have the help of Luke, the beloved physician. Yet, al though he had this help and although he prayed earnestly to God to remove a painful and troublesome malady, it was never taken away. Neither the efforts of the doctor nor the fervent prayers were disregarded-all were responded to but according to the Un Father's higher wisdom and love. doubtedly Prayer has a place and Medical Science has a place, but there are limits con- cerning which our knowledge at present is small. One outstanding certainty is that medical and surgical practitioners trusted and honoured now as never before. They know their work better and as a body they are more devoted to securing the best possible results all round. Having said this whole-heartedly.. I trust that doctors will point out that pardon me when I venture they have their dangers as doctors. There is. temptation to materialism. For the most part they deal with the body. on food power of BOVRIL !
A Report made at the Annual Meeting of the British Medical Asso- ciation in Birmingham (July, 1911) revealed some remarkable results of physiological experiments showing the body building power of Bovril on human beings. They confirmed the striking results of the Feeding Experiments conducted last year on animals, which proved that the body-building power of Bovril was from
10 to 20 times the amount taken.
But these exhaustive experiments have further conclusively demonstrated that "in the human experiments the increase was even more marked.”
The conclusions which particularly interest the public, and which are now tacontrovertibly established by these latest teste, are as follow-
1. The Remarkable Food Value of Bovril itself,
2. The pecullar power of Bovril in enabling the system to
extract greater nutriment from ordinary foods.
3. That these two properties together give Bovril a body- building power of from 10 to 20 Umes the amount taken. (See diagram.) F
That is to say, Bovril is not only a great body-builder in itself but it also enables other foods to feed the body mom, This important fact explains the value
of Bovril in bringing up the defeastra forces of the body to their highest power, and is protecting the system against the dangers of disease.
