TOKYO, January 2.
A STRANGE NEW YEAR'S EVE. The city of Tokyo without its trams may be likeped to a wilderness in dreariness and to a desert in its vast expanse destitute of means of communication. A city nearly ten miles from north to south, and eight miles from east to west without its chief means of communication, at the busiest season of the year, is suddenly thrust back into pre tram days, and the inhabitants become villagers, who travel abrojut oa shank's mare and of compulsion remain wedded to their district and seldom ventae beyond its bounds? Asked for his opinion regarding the recent purebase of the Elder-Dempster Lite by the Royal Mail Company, he replied that a tendener towards amalgamation had been noticeable for some time amongst the great British steamship companies, and that it was now proclaimed with patriotic pride in the press across the Channel that Great Britain once more possessed the grateat shipowsing company in the world. This could hardly be lakon literally, as the difference in the aggregate tonnage of the new concernand that of the Hamburg America Line, which now amounted to 1,200,000 tons rog, gross, was trifling; besides the former partook more of the nature of a financial trast based, on the support of a great extent banke and brukers on terms in COMO OÀÉÉZ - iundmissible by the laws of this country, 1 was more loosely strong together than his com pany, and even the Morgan Trust, although also mere or less a financial combination, bad the advantage over it of being under the sole stras 26 management of so able a mums as Mr. Lamay. Be this as it may, however, he concluded, the Hamburg America Line with its homogeneous orgenisation and its large capital need foar no competition and will be able to hold its own against all comers.

WHAT CAUSED TRE STRIKE. Briefly stated, the motormen ductors of the Tokyo City Tramways (only recently municipalised) refused to continue work on the morning of December 31, and traffic was practically at a standstill until the morning of January 2nd. The causes of the strike, so suddenly determined and acted upón, are interesting, and no less so is the character of the settlement, which may be described as a complete victory for the men, Some weeks ago the liquidators of the old Tokyo Tetsudo Kaisha, in a statement of the disposal of the assets, announced the NEW setting aside of the sum of one million yen to be distributed among the officials and men of the company as bonus. Of this, four hundred thousand yen was to be divided EXTRA FINE DIAMOND JEWELLERY among the officials and the remainder among

Among the sight hundred were men who had been in the service for nearly twenty years, and these were the fortunate possessors of something like 2,000 yen each on December 30, when the money was dis. tributed. The youngest in service n these supermen, received a present of a hundred yen. On the other hand, the bonuses for the notormen and conductors were from so yen down to 16. Now the grievance of the men lies in this, that while a conductor or motorman of longest service only received so-yonths aan in the next grade above, even though he had only been promoted a day or two before, received double the sem.
