4. S. WATSON & CO.. interest to many foreigners is, will there be the usual observance this year of the begin- LIMITED,
ning of a New Year in the Chinese calendar on February 18th ?.. It is a question which no doubt will soon be answered by further proclamations. Of course, the mercantile class will dud a difficulty in their account -keeping by the suddau adoption of the 9-now
calendar, and we notice that in some provinces at least they are allowed to defer their adoption of the new calendar in business until the old Chinose-year expires. It is therefore likely that, though Covera- ment departments may not observe the customary holiday, the mercantile class and the people generally will do so; but this will probably be the last time the Chinese will celebrate the New Year according to the old calendar, and in future their celebrations, presumably will synchronise with our own.
