report.

The Committoo are unanimously of opinion that taking into account not only the academie but also the commercial need, which the School

of Oriental Stadiss is iafeaded to supply, would be difficult to fad a sito with greater advantages than that of the London Tastitation, and they are also of opinion that, subject to certain medications, Professor Simpson's plans would provide convenient and satisfactory accommodation for the new School at the outset. Appended to the report is a nota embodying certain suggestions in regard to these plans.

The Committed say --

We desire to emphasise the fact that the vali of the site of ths London. Institution can- not be estimated at less than £100,000, and that at a cost of some £20,000 or £25,000 the exist ing buildings could be adapted for the new School. The site and buildings of the Berlin School of Oriental Studies were provided at Government expense at

1911.

The estimated annual expenditure for domestic and administrative staff establishment expanses of the School, if placed

estimated the library expenses of the School at £425 por ensum; so that over £1,000 of the total expenditure on the library must be sot down to the expense of taking over the existing library of the Institution. The total expensen set down by Lord Bear's Committes under the headings hero considered (and set down in their report, action 40, as library and administrative expenses) amount to £2,625. If we subtract from our own estimate of £4,000 the sum of £1,075, due to the expense of carrying on the present London Institution Library, the dif ference between our own figures and those of Lord Reay's Committee is reduced to £300 por

The question of expenditure on the salaries of the director and teaching staff, estimated by Lord Resy's Committee to amount to £10,100, is one which does not direally come within the purrier of the present interim report.
