CHINA'S LEADER OF REBELLION,

PERSONAL SKETCH OF SUN YAT

BEN.

[ AT A CORRESPONDENT IN THE "DAILY

CHRONICLE"]

The first time I saw San Yst Bon was at a

dinner in the Mount Austin Hotel, Hongkong, to 1892. The dinner was given by Dr. James Cantlie to calabrate the granting of diplomas to the first two Licentiates of the College of Me. doine for Chiness in Hongkoor. Dr. Cantlie -presided, as Dean of the College, and the Governor, Sir William Robinzon, K.C.M.G

many prominost Europeau and Chinese residents, inola-ling the members of the Légia- lative Council, were present.

Sun was one of the two Lioentiales. He impressed me then as being a young Chinonsa intelligent apparanon, and he

createci a

of exceptio saryurable impression by his brief speel acknowledging the toast of his health and that of his successful confrére. it was not till two and a half years later, during the pro- es of the China-Japan War, in Novemfar, 31- 1894, that I spoke to Sun Yat Sen.

The circumstances were "somewhat dramatic, In the north, the Chinese forces had suffered successive defeats, Always more or less día affeeled to the Manchu dynasty, the Southern Chiusa wore showing symptoms of unrest. A Bofera Party bel come into being, and, as editor of one of the local newspapers, I had received bints from privata sources that attempts were being made to foment an uprising. The moment certainly appeared op- for throwing off the Mundu yoke, and porting Some of us, knowing the wretched condition of the people in the neighbouring provinces under manlarinic oppression, sympathised with the

pirations of theso Chinese Reformers.

PLANNING A REBELLION.

On the invitation of a prominent Chinese resident, whose idontily it would be inja-tietons to disclose, I was asked to meet Sun Yot Ben and a few of his immediate adherents in the Hung Fa Lan, in Queen's Road, one of the most fashionable Chiuso restaurants. Aftor dinner wo adjourns to the roof of the Hung Fu Lan, al there, cn a cold, cloar evening, under tho stare, Sun gradually deraleped his robeer for solzing Conton and its ars n'; arwaing his followers, and raising the flag of roroit, marching upon the principal cities south of the Yangtao, and establishing a purely Chinese Republie.

It was impossible to avoid being improsKĖČ by Sub oarnestness and the loftiness of his ideals. He was a dapper little man, not more serious than 5ft 6in in height, with a sedate mannor. He spoke slowly and without gesture, always convering the feeling that he as exercising restraint in the disclosure of bis plous. He made it absolutely clear that there was nothing anti-foreign in his project. Indeed be hoped to be regarded with benevolent nou. trality by the European Powers, and was anxious to secure my offices, as representing.ome of the Lordon dailios, to set forth theirus aims of his movement,że soon as an ovorí step was taken.

After that, we had frequent moetings, some-. tints at the Hung Fa Lat, sometimes in the private offices of Reformers, but more frequent- ly in a back room in the Hongking Hotel.

The last time I saw Sun was in Singapore in September, 1908. Sun Yat Sen dined with me en sovoral necasions at Raffia Hotel, afterwards coxing to my roome to discuss the prospects of his party. While my sympathies were and still are-with the Reform Party in China, I felt that the trend of affairs at Paking was towards. reform through the legitimate olanner of the Imperial Government, and I strove to dissuade Su from making any further effort to over- throw the Manchu dynasty. It was also pointed ant to him that China's commitments to foreigners were so great and the undesirability of disturbing tho even flow of trudo so strong that there was a possibility to put it no more strongly-of the Powers intersaning to support. the Imperial authorities, thus rendering efforts st rovolution on the lines of China for the Chiness absolutely hopeless.

IDEAS OF FREEDON,

Nothing would convince sun of the failiy of his offorts. Quietly insistent, without any display of warmth or enthusiasm, he brushed asida all obstacles. He was content to parane his object and he was convincal he would be successful. He was the same calm, determined life man I had sat with under the stars on the

roof of the Hang Fa Lau 14 years before.

It was duria one of the conversations in Singapore that he gave me details of his career. Sun Yat Sen 'was born in Houngakan, near Mao, uz 1867. His father was a farmor, and, I believe. Christisa con vart. His brother was engaged in business' as Amorohant at Iouplula, and when about 12 years of age Sun Yat Sen wout there with his mether and was educated in various mission sebonis. He first went to an English mission Behool, and then to a French school, and was for a shart period at the Oahn College (American). Needless to say, he speaks English Buon ly, but does not write it with idiomatic ourrectness. He returned to China and wont to Canton be study medicine under the famous Dr. Karr, an Amerian missionary.

The Hongkong College of Medicine for Chinese having been started in connection with the Alico Memorial Hospital in Hollywood Road, he went there in 1887, and after a five-years .course he received his diploma as "the first licentiate of the collége.

the miserable conditions under which his follow- countrymen existed, he began to interest himself in their weliers, and simoat immediately after graduating be identified himself closely with tie Reform movement, and became one of the leaders of the organization in Hongkong and South China, He practised his profession for short time in Macau and afterwarde in Caa- ton; and it was while he was in Canton that ho took up setive work as a reformar. There was considerable dissatisfaction with the admin- istration of Lu Han Chang (brother of the more famoris Viceroy Li Hung Chang, which grow in strength during the administration of Tan Chang Lin. A small group of educated young wen ban-led themselves together to work for reform and emancipation; with Sun Yat Sen at their head, and he has remained the leader of the movement ever since.

THE FOURTH REVOLT, The present revolt in the Upper, Tangise region is the fourth movement with which Sun- Yat Son has been personally identified--the first at Cruton failing through the prematuro action of Yenng Ki Wau in sending asms from Hongkong before Sau was ready: the sound at Weishow, which was successful up to a point, and failed through Sun not reaching the centre of diaffection in time with reinforcements, and the third, on the frontiers of Kwongsi and Kwangtung, which dragged on for nine months, and then failed through the fardines of the populace in this sparsely inhabited rogion in joining the revolutionary forces.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1828, 1811.

It remains to be seen what place the Yangtan Tarolt will take in the history of modern China. So far as appearances. go, it is the biggest and most successful effort yet engineered by Bum Yat Son, and upon its result may depend the fature of China as a nation: Whatever it MAY it is neither anti-foreign nor suti- develop into, Christian, bat is the attempt of an awakening people, led by educated and enlightened men, to emancipate themselves from the enarrating and demoralising influence of an offate ruling class, alion, in most respecte, to the character in ties of the purely Chinesa race.
