THE ABOR EXPEDITION.
-Calontta,-September 18th. The steamer Vizini 'with 650 officers, and men left Prinsepa Ghat on Saturday morning bound for Kobo the troops being en route to the Abor expedition. The 32ad Sikhs, com prising 13 allers and won, loft this morning tor Kobo. The Abors, although they will not have to face much artillery, will liave to face a good deal of explosives. To addition to the gun

cotton carrind by the
sud rainers some explosivo form an essential part of the equip. ment of the 32nd Pioneers, whose offers are exporta in their iss. It is stated that's good many of the patiesuscited in Asasm for the Abor expedition ara suffering from fever.
Referring to the transport difficulties in oon- nection with the Abor expedition a Dibrugarh correspondent wires to the Englishman: Pre- parations are rapidly being pashed forward, Majer Vaughan, is oburge of supply and trans- port, is accumulating two months supply of stores on the fat Kamrup at the Dibrugarh toumer ghat. The fiat Kamrup has been taken over from the steamor company, and will b towed up to Kobo about the 23rd instant, and will be found extremely unfal there, ponding the building of suitable offices and godowns. Manipur rice was desired for the use of native troops, but supplies are exhausted audi epanot bo replenished azil atout the end of October when the road to Dimapur will be negotiable. The moor launch Sissi has also been takon over from the Biasi sav mills. This boat is forty" foot long, equipped with a powerful Thorney- croft motor, and is quite the fastest craft on the river. She will be employed runding bo tween Kobo and Dibrugarb, and Major Vaughan and Captain Douloy loft in her recently to pay a visit to Kobo. Endeavours are being made to obtain other boats, but diffoulty may be expati- enced in obtaining suitable onei locally. The local supply of country boats is completely dis organised, and as hosts and boatmen wore improad for service when the first advance wan made to Pasighat Dasmalli the bostmen took alarm and decamped to their country Even Aesungee and Miris have-hidden their boats up and down, the country, and it is with the greatest difficulty that bouts can be obtained at Sikwuk. It is feared that the river traflo will be seriously interfered with in the district and basting of thatch and country produce will be carried on under great difficulties. Tea gardens, badly situated for read and rail com
unication and dependent on the river for their supplies were badly put to it, and it was after considerable trouble ned myeh anxioty that one-
the for was able to obisia suficient rice coolies. It is not anticipated that this will interfere with the expedition, as they will dopend chiefly on steamers to take supplies as far as Kaho, whence they will be carried road, either by ecolies or males. Three hundred of the latter are coming up for the use of the expedition. This transport will be supplement- ed by a boat corps to be raised among local Miris. Kabo at present is but a clearing in forset jangle with a strong stockade asila guard of milltary police. It in situated about a mile
bolow Lal Mukh on the banks of the Brahmaputra Mr. W. M. Dundas in intervals of duty has been supervising the work there, and it is intended to have a clearing at least 100 yards square. The road to Pasighat in from horn. It is three days march and there are two. Camps on the way. It is apprehended that the recent rise in the river and the heavy rains vill seriously interfere with the condition of the road,
A detachment of the Lakhimpur Military Police leaves for Kobo in about a week, and the 32nd Piontors and 8th Gurkhas are due to arrive at Kobe about the end of the month. But the movements of the 2nd Gurkhas are at prosent uncertain. The Hain atorkade at Pasighat is occupied by a detachment of the Lakhimpur Military Police, with Lient. A. B. Bagwell, 4th Gurkhas, in command. The telegraph.depart- mont, with a guard of fifty sepoye, aro kying down a wire betwe`n Badays and Fasight, and have have now crossed the Sissi river. The Planters Stores and Agency Co., Ltd., have arranged to open a branch store at Kobo.

The Rangoon Gazette of the 20th ult, soys The rapid rise in the price of rice has become the principal commercial topic of conversation in Rangoon. In the districts distress in being felt, and as a result of the high prices comes the fear of crimes, in partienlar dacoities, rabboring and thefts. Some well-to-do people have notually moved from the districts to Rangoon and other large towns for protection. The paddy season and cultivators vero opened with
with high prices tempted to sell at once without giving thought to the fature. Asarosult fàe stook of paddy in district godowns dwindled until it fell far below what it had been in previous years and traders bave hid high for what remains. It appears that in July and Jans a good bit of gewbling in rice took place in the city. This was followed by partial failure of the rice crop là Java, au enormous demand coming from that place which resulted, it is estimated, in over 150.000 tons of rice being shipped thore. After this prices. which bad gone up to Rs. 410 for a hundred baskets, came down again to Rs. 370 for the same quantity. Then came the announcement that owing to the floods in Central Ching the crop there was short. This in turn was followed the reports that crops were short in Saigon, and next that the Siamese rice grop was a failers owing to heavy foods. This sent prices up agaic and when the information was received that both Saigos and Slam had by a Govern- mont order prohibited the export of rice, the Barman ligures out so high that they broke all recorde. Those drastic measures also brought now customers for Barms rice into the field, nam-ly, Manila and the Philippine Islands. Being usable to get rios from Saigon, whers they had been largo customers before, and Sist also being abut, they turned towards "Buras as China, the Straits Java and other places have dons, and onltivators, not stopping to think that they were depriving their own people of their principal food prednot, have taken advantage of the high prices at sold their hoarding of the staple. It is stated that contracts have beon lu seme instances already made for delivery of rice as late as December, but most of the con tracts will expire at the latter part of this month and October. There were rumoure about the market that Bombay stockholders of Burma rica had given orders to ship it to Singapore for shipment to China and other places. Also eur. rent were rumours that Indian paddy was to be shipped to Itangoon from Calenita and milled hero, Although some time most elapse before the new season commences it appeare to be the consensus of opinion among the leading firms that the Barms crops.
this
year will be les than the Government estimate. On Monday: prices reached the higbest figure that has ever been kuorn in when they reached Rs. 545 for one Bam hundred baskets of rice for export, and went even higher for local consumption. Yesterday they had dropped to about Rs. 50 for the same number of baskets. There does not seem, we are informed, to be any likelihood of prices going down to any great extent as long as the
