COAL IN THE F.M.S.

RESULTS OF OPERATIONS DY TUS NIGES DEPARTMENT.

The possibilities of a profitable coal entput from the FM.B. are alluded to by the Chief Secretary in his report for 1910. He remark: During the year 1908 Malay named Haji Abdul-Hadi found pisses of black coal in the bed of a small stream near the south boundary of the Hanjang Panjang Forest Ressere, in the State of Selangor: steps were taken for pros. peoting, which continued till May, 1910. The Geologist reporting early this year (1911) on these coal measures states that the results the operations carried out by the Minas Dopartient show that the coal extords along the strike for more than half a mile, and an examination of their rocords leads him to believe that there is another seam to the north of that exposed in the nait driven by them, but as only one of the pits sink And none of the bores have gone through the latter there is no vertical section proving this the one pit, which pierced the soam, passed. through 24 feet of coal and then entered into light coloured sandy ground; the Geologist adds that it is clear from the evidence obtained in the adit that the scam of that point must be of great thickness, probably 30 feet,

Bereral analyses bato been made of the coal and the tests shows that it was a high parentage of moisture, a low perpentage of ized carbon and a low percentage of ash: this last, as pointed out by the Geologist, is good point. but the first two are the cause of the evaporation tests comparing so poorly with those of other coats. The mean of five tests gave 9.8 as the evaporative value of ong poned of fuel in lbs. of water at 212 degrees Fahrenholt. This compares unfavourably with other coals, the percentage of which is given by the Geologist as follows:

TA- SADANG IN ANY WAY RESPONSIBLE *

The growth of Sabang Bay as a cooling port, Vist. Peak says the Times of Ceylon, has been quite reGap Rock markable of late, and one of the heads of a well- Mas known Colombo firm of shipping agents, discuss- Wachow ing the somewhat startling decrease in the Haihow. tonnage of the port to which attention bas Pakboi recently been called, suggested that possibly we Phalien might look to Sabang for a partial oxplanation Tonrane of the position. He believed that, in the main, C. St. James the falling off was fortuitons, but Sabang bad

Aparri been making such rapid strides, and the facilities Maaila there were ac mach greater than here, that he Legaspi considered it quite possible that the Dutch port Bacolod had been the means of jobbing" Colombo to a Toile considerable extent. Af Sabang there was free Colm ...... entry for vessels bunkering, and the sizin were Labuan able to go alongside the wharves.

The decrease could not be accounted for by any increase in the price of cool at Colombo, for the price had gone down. It will be re- membered that we published a cable the other day to the effect that owing to the heavy Suen Canal dues on increasing number of cargo vessels went by the Cape route to Australia and India The Australian tonnage, however, had not decrossed, but increased, for the New Zealand boats now called at Colombo, and during the your, when the Australian strike was on, more steamers walled here than before, Bahang was going ahead at a remarkable reto, and being on the direct route-east and went- it probably bad something to do with the falling

off in the tonnage figurs at this port.

Asked whether he considered that growing Weather popularity of the Cape routs had had any

Bain effect on the tonnage coming to Colombo, the gentleman wo approached was convinced thaf it bad not. He attributed the increasing popular- ity of this route to the fact that better steamers were now being gat on. The P. and O, for in- alance, had taken over the Lund (Blue Anchor) line and had extended it, the Aberdeen line bad greatly improved their service, and the Blae Fannel line had also started à service of steamers is the Caps, which carried passengers.
