versant with the extent and the character of his work. We
may at the same time feel conf- dent that his mantle has follon upon susumsors by whom that work will be continued and com pleted, and that the example which he sat will not have been given in vain. He was prominent, not only as an investigator, but also me an in-aths structor of the public in relation to tropical dis-

After this notice the present number of the Annala opana with a short bat important paper contributed by Professor Gabbi; of Rome, who announces, as the result of extensive observa- tions carried on by himself or andor his iroo. tipa, that many of the febrile maladies of Italy and Sicily are realy identical with the so-called Mediterráneau or Malta-fever, which was traced
by Sir David Brace to an organism convoyed to
the sufferers through the median of goat's milk. Professor Gabbi has been able to show
that, both in Sicily and in Southern Italy, goats are carriers of this organism, not only those imported from Malta, but those bred in these constries. An approximate estimate is that from three to soventeen per vent, of the Sicilian and Soath Itsline gosts
are affected, but the symptoms which their milk produces in human consumers have so far been much less severe than those observed in Malta. The matter is to sorae extent of impor-
tance to us since many saggestions have of late years beau made concerning the probable freedom of goat's mille from the bavilles of tubercle, and proposals have been put forward for a greatly indressed use of the animals as milk prodocere in this country. It some clear that any attempt of the kind could not be safely made except in conjunction with careful
and
systematic examination for the Meditar. raasan bacillus, whether in its more virulent Maltese or in its mildar Italian form. Profasor Gabbi's paper is followed by ons ou a kiadred subject, containing an elaborate inquiry by Mr. Newstead into the life history of the "Papatao flies of Malta, by which also, it would

the Maltess microcoonus is frequently conveyed from person to person, with the result of pro- ducing fever. The description of the dies capies forty-eight folio pages, copionely illustrated with magnided portraits presenting them as oxtremely formidable banats bat
in common life they would fall sader the general description of "widges,” anch may often be seen in loads
48 gear water on a summer evening. Their numbers are beyond counting, their minuteness enables them to pass through the openings in a mosquito net without touching it with thair wings, and the solution of the problem of how to deal with them has not yet been arrived at. They are believed to breed chiefly in -Jack orovices and crannies of old and half-rained walls; but their extreme minuteness rooders it almost impossible to discover either their eggs er their larvae, and, like other evil things, hey appear to have an appreciation of darkness, which is materially conducive to their safety. The on'y practical conclusion at which Mr. Newstead has been able to arrive is that daylight should be freely admitted into Maltese bedrooms, and that it is prudent to sleep in them under a flae net of strong ehillon, with a wide strip of salico around the bottom, which insy be firmly tu kad under the mattreas and will come up high enough to protect the sleeper where a limb may touch the net. He is also of opinion that s general use of electric fans, arranged to send currents of air outward through the windows, would oppose an insurmountable chatacle to the entrance of minute creatures of feeble fight.
Of the other papers, one by Mosera. Simp. son and Edis on the raiation of the organic phosphorus content of various diots to diseases of nutrition, and particularly to bari-beri, is of some importance in relation to home distetic problems as well as to those of the tropics. It seems to be established that beri-bori arisas
from living exclusively, or nearly so upon a diet of decorticated rice, and that it does not ocsur in rics eaters who consume the skin as well as the inuer portions of the grain. The same principle is found to apply to many other seed and it in abundantly illustrated by accounts of experiments on pigeons and other animals, which have been found to suffer from condition snalogous 10 beri-beri when fed upou various kinds of decorticated grain, 'nad to recover when an a'equate proportion of the bank or outer covering was added to their food. The paper is mainly as account of work done by Dr. Schaumsan, and contained in three successive ambers of the Archives for Ship and Tropical, Hygiene; and there seems to be practically no doubt of his having solved the problem, and having thus shown the way to the easy avoidance of a very seriona sad often fatal malady. The interest of the question to the dwellers in temperate climates who are not Largo rice consumera is mainly that the foots brought out appear to be of general application, and to hold good in relation to many kinds of which wheat must be included. grain, among There is therefore a ecnsiderable amount foundation for the belief, lately brought into prominenos, that the outer skin of wheat possesses a decided dietetie value, and that its removal, unless made good by the presence of sufficiency of phosphorus compounds of the right kind in other parts of the diet, would he highly injurious to bread caters The writers declare that the results obtained by Behsumarn and other siperimenters fully confirm the claims of the advocates of standard or whole. meal bread; and they expect that his conclu sion that causes of the same kind are directly concerned in the production of rickets is likely, before long, to be fully established by observa tion and experiment.
