Extract of a letter from the Superintendent of Police, to the Chief Magistrate, dated 24th January 1848.

"I have the honour to inform you that at the present time there are six deficiencies in the European Police owing to the impossibility of obtaining fitting men to fill the vacancies,

and that at the expiration of the month this number will be increased to twelve, in consequence of resignations and constables retiring from the service from ill-health. As this deficiency affords an opportunity of making an alteration in the Police Duties, which experience has found to be desirable, by increasing the Indian Force in lieu of the Europeans; I respectfully submit the following particulars by which it will be perceived that in addition to the anticipated benefits arising from the change, the expense of the Police Department will be reduced.
