The second annual general meeting was held recently at the London Chamber of Com- merce, Mr. Keith Fraser Arbuthnot (Chairman of the Company) presiding,

report, said that he thought the shareholders SIEMSSEN & Co.,
would cealiss that their interests in Sumatra The com wore progressing very favourably. pany's planted ares now aggrogated 1,972 acros, out of which 1,450 wore clean-wooded. Tho
524 remaining acros had hitherto been atsip-weeded, but were now being taken more thoroughly in hand and wors cloon-wealed airo, There were some 200,00 Para treas planted en their 1,972 acres, which gave ab ut 100 tree's to the arre, a system of wide planting schich, ho thought, world give the best results.
The planting had been well done, there having bexa very furr racanoice, and what supplying mas necessary had been regularly kept up; nor had they been troubled much by disease or peats. The growth also was reporte ou as excellent, and Mr. Lage, who visited the cinta on Jun 28, during Mr. Patrick Eladow's absence, who was at home on a well-earned holiday, ended us report with the words:The whole work on the estate is being carefully and systematically dane, and the properly will prove to be a very valuable one.
The foliage and growth of the Tapping trees leave nothing to be desired." was started is June last, and they expected to get 30,000lb. dry rubber during the 12 months, which was, he hoped, a fairly mafe ostinate, ze they were already tapping 10,000 trees, and 11,400 had been marked for tapping, besides which they were told that there were 30.000 frees of over 15in. in girth 3ft, from The ground, many of which should soon come into the tapping sound. All this was highly satisfactory. Ust. what, perhaps, brought it homs to them with the greatest force was the fact that their estate had come to the tapping stage about two years before they expeated, or even anticipated, in the original prospatus. This was not the cals point in their favour, when compared with that document, for so careful wore the board when this company was floated to underestimate rather than to exaggerate the ultimate profits that they only calculated on 21b. of rabbar a tree, or, say, 2011. au nore, with a profit of only is. per Jb., and state-! that on that Lasis and on its than capital the company would eventually pay 50 per cent, per annue.
THE NEW CAPITAL.
On the nasota sido of the balanoo-shnut, they had their estate, with nearly 2,000 acres planted, standing in their books at £50,694, or, say, £25 an acr. There was also the item £11,000, being the cash deposited with their bankers to guarantee the dividual on their subsidiary com- pany, The Sumatra Proprietary Rubber Plantations," and there was also their holding of 10,000 shares in that company. The other items, amounting to £4,208, represented cash and advances to coolies, &o. This cash was not enough to carry the company oy for very long; He explained the reasons for the board Mineresse of the capital by

them in funds. Such a course would put
fór all present requirements, and the 15,000 shares which would remain over they would, he hoped, be able to issue later at a very substantial premium, and the prosceds woont enable them to and iring to maturity & con-
plaat siderable farther areage. The pressat proposal. of issuing shares at 10s, premium was consider ably below what was, in bis opinion, their piso. per value, to present shareholdera,
Mr. Henry Da Courcy Hamilton seconded the motion, and, after a short discussion, during which Mr. Hadow mado a short statement con firming the chairman's remarks as to the satis- factory position and prospects of the estate, the report was adopted.
An extraordinary general mesting followed, at which a resolution to increase the capital to £100,000 by the creation of 25,000 shares of £1 each was carried ananimously,
SUMATRA PROPRIETARY RUBBER
PLANTATIONS (LIMITED).
The second annual general motiug was kohl at the London Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Keith Fraser Arbuthuot (Chairman of the Company) prosiding.
The Chairman said that their total cash resources amounted to over £20,000, and Dore was also the unissued capital, which should bring in a further £30.000, so that they were in a sound financial position. As this was only a planting company-he mount a company which was formed to acquire a block of 4,000 acres of jungle land with a view to clearing and.
Fara rubbor-there was it with plasting little for him to tell thom beyond what was contained in the report. During the period under review they had increased their plantol 352 panking their total acroage area by acns, ander rubber 827 acres planted with 90.220 trees. Their expen-litars during the year and been £11,055, makings total expoaditure during the first two years of £18,427, or, say, £22 per agre. This expenditure was, in his opinion, somewhat high, but he could-assure them that it had come about purely through natural causes. Labour, for instance, was considerably more exponsive than it used to be a couple of years 1go. There were also the items for managers' and assistante salaries, building materials, o., all of which had shown an advancing teulency. As chairman of the company he could not regret any of their expenditore, but he fel much more able to congratulate them on the prospects of the company because of the excellent wark which had been done in opening and plant ing their land and erecting good and permanent buildings, besides the work of inaugursting and maintaining an eficient labour force, than if he were reporting to them that their estate up to now had cost a few pounds less per acre, but was not in first-class urder. It was the board's policy to continuo erlending as fast as possible, but to make their first care the taining
of their present ares. He concluded by moving the adoption of the report.
Mr. Philip B. Hervey seconied the motion,
and, after some remarks from Mr. Hadow, with regard to the satisfactory condition of the estate. it was agreed to
