A Clergyman

Nervous Collapse, Brain Fag,

Neuralgia-

For getting things dom, making things go, the invigorating stimulus of Phosferine cannot be equalled, says the Rev. A. H Field. Fully aware that as a clergyman he is bound to make sure of the accuracy of his estimation of Phosferine, this gentleman states that, distinct from other cases, he has wrified and tested the efficacy of the tonic himself. It was Phosferine, and Phosferine alone, he says, which raised him from the nervous collapse, remedied the brain-fag aud neuralgia which held down bis efforts and arrested his plans over a lengthy period. Since taking Phosferine-he is entirely free from nervous distresses, and can put his whole heart and energies into his work, and indeed, such is his activity that he has roused many helpers to his cause. Experience has taught the Rev. h. H. Field that numbers of people do not realise their languor and half-hearted efforts are due to lack of nerve force, and he believes they will quicker appreciate the efficacy of Phosferine by learning of his own recovery.

Have No Existence Now.

Rev. A. H. Field, 336, Breitenham Road, Walthamstow, writes: "It gives me inuch pleasure to testify to the beneficial effects of Phosferine in many cases of nervous disorder, where I have advised the use of your tonie. Some four years ago I myself had a nervous breakdown, and a friend advised Phosferine. I took his advice, and speedily found that I had acted wisely, for the neuralgic pains and the mental weariness soon took flight, and I was thoroughly braced up. Recently some members of my church, at my suggestion, tried the remedy, and were quite satisfied with the beneficial, results. I have advised its use now for nearly four years, and in no case has it yet proved a failure. When one thinks of the great number of so-called nerve remedies, it is satisfactory to find at least one upon which reliance can be placed. I wish your Phosferine every success. When preaching away, I have noticed Phosferine finds a place in the village homes."

MAKING OBJECTS

INVISIDLE,

Certain objects are now made Invisible by the physicist. Some years ago, Prof. R. W. Wood conted the ivalde of a hoflow globe with luminous paint, and showed that a block of glassplaced with- in was invisible when locked at through a swall sporture. Transparent objects disappear when immersed in liquids of the same colour and refrac tive index. A-glass rod is mande invisible in a way yet more striking by Prof. Kaufman, a famous Geman experiratater, whoso only a pices of cardboard. This apparatus is

cut into the form of A -fannel. A perfectly clear and clean glass rod is. placed upright in the centre of the faszol, with a glow-lamp exactly over it at a height of --&-foot or two, and on looking through a slit-in- the cardboard the rod is found to be quite in risible. It comes into view suddonly when it or | tho funnel is inclined, cr the lamp is shifted. •

STANDARDS OF COLOUR NEXT.

An international colour scale is urged by a Danish chemist. Accurate standards of weights and measures are established, but so far no achome of colours has been adopted to onakle one to make an exset record of any tint observed To make the reference standardin më prehange- able as possible, it is suggested that they bo reproduced in some perronnent material like coloured glase. Some colour scheme based on Cherreal's original system has been proposed, but a critic points out that the coloured Alanges of Loribond's fistonster offer a "conveni. ́ent mothed of making standard comparisons.

VEXETABLE CANCER.

A vegetable growth analogous to the cancer of animals has been noted by Dr. Bashford. the British cancer export. It occurs on the sugar beet and allied plants as tumors, which ein be grafted to other healthy plants, and its general behaviour is much like that of the animal cancer. The discoverer bas not succeeded in detecting any parazite as a cause of the tumora.

COLDS AND COLDS,

It is rather surprising that not more is known about "common colds," which now seer to ha not one disorder but severa), and perhaps many- They affect the head, throat, larynx of chest, er varging combinations of these parts; and some appear to be due to infection by bacteria, which may be of various kinds, while others result from irritation by plant pollen, draughts nerid vapours, ar through abnormal conditions of the mezibranes. From an investigation in Boston, Mass., for December, 1909, to June, 1910, Dr. J. A. Honeij has concluded that over half of the population had colds in the six mentier. One fifth of the population were kept away from work, and in 568 individuals the time lost averaged more than six days. representing an individnal money loss of over $21, with- out counting the cost of medical treatment. March was the month of most colda, the head. cold" being the most common form. Persons of 30 to 40 years were more affected than those of other ages, and department store employees suffered more than persons in other occanations, Preventive methods half of them losing timė,

are recommended in dealing with common colds. Better working conditions, pure air, oven temperature, proper ventilation and proper humidity are important, and nourishment, general bygiene and proper clothing neosseary precautions Infections colds, it is suggested, should be izolated 48 hours or more. *Subject to colds" was a frequent report, and this is supposed to have meant poor nutrition, or ignorance of the value of fresh air, or poor working conditions.

À WEATHER BELIEF REFUTED.

The old belief that extreme cold in winter marks the anti-syclone, or region of high atmes- pheric pressure, is contradicted by W. H. Dines, the English meteorologist. In Greenwich rec cords for 50 years, he found 74 periods of freez- ing weather, and overy one that was noted for severity or length occurred when the barometer

ELECTRC-PLATING PORCELAIN,

Decorating glassware with electro-plated designs has been followed in Germany by s similar process applied to porcelain, Finely powdered grapliite is added to a solution of alkaline silicate, in which the powder romains suspended, and a design traced with this on the porcelain forma a conductive coating, on which in oleotre-plate deposit can be made in the usual way. Silver is usually employed, though nickel may be used. Platters, bowls, tea-sets, coffee-sete, tureous and other dishes of porcoluiíean bo
