CATHAY
A SOCIAL AND POLITICAL NOVEL OF ADSORBING INTELEST,
By CHAS I HALCOABE-
The reporters asked if she had beard the re port, that her parents contemplated an action against Jack for kidnapping. She replied
"Did you hear that, Jack How ridiculous! If there was any kidnapping, I kidnapped Jack-
did not kidnap me. See here," the continu al, displaying visiting cards bearing the name of Mrs. John Geraghty, "I had them done to- day, because I wanted to see what my new
name looked like. Isn't it lovely "
+ REASON FOR ELOPING. "I eloped." she continued, because I hate society. They wanted me to go in for the life all the young women of my class lead, but I robelled. The society mea are vapid and inane. There is no real man among them. They bor- od mo to distraction; and the women aro heart- loss and self-centred, living only for the pleasure and excitement of possessing more towels and more extravagant frocks than their reighbours. "So when I met a true man like Mr. Geragh ty I was attacted to him. He is so intensely different from the only kind I ever knew befors. It was his type of Hell supporting manliness That won mE,
"I met him first three years ago, when he brought to our house s motor car which father purchased for me. In the following summer we woro fu lovo, so you the elope mont was not the result of a hasty impulse and pappy affection. I would not marry antil I roached the legal age of eighteen. I was too wise. So we waited. I was eighteen a week before the elopement, and now they can't de anything to us.
I am not afraid of poverty with us kraband, and as for what society says it does not bothor ma in the slightest society which mlios on the coming marriage of a forty six-year divorced millionaire with an eighteen-year girl and frowns on my love marriage. What kind of society is it? I have no words to express my opinion."
Several off 18 by enterprising firms have been made to Jack, but he has declined them so far. The French family refuse to discuss the affair, bat Jack's family condemn the match, and declars they tried to get Jack to give ap Miss French when they discovered their friendship, and thought they had succeeded. The slope. ment was a disagresable surprise to them.
