upon the Colony, as distressed British subjects. The latter rule also applies to the case of the two Widows and one Orphan of deceased Policemen, and who will now proceed to Madras. The accompanying Schedule shows the gratuity to each person, which is included in the before mentioned sum of £83.15.0. and I hope the measure will obtain the approval of your Lordship, as it is connected with the subject of your Despatch No: 112 of 8th September, to which I replied by mine 12/31 of the 27th Ultimo.

I beg further to report that I have similarly sanctioned the appropriation of a prize Pirate boat for Police purposes: she will be very useful from her size and strength for visiting the harbours of the Island, as well as for hoisting up and securing the Police boats, as detailed in Mr. Superintendent May's Letter of the 20th Instant, a copy of which is enclosed. The alterations necessary will not be any additional expense to the Colony, as the sale of certain captured boats, and a variety of condemned property taken from Piratical vessels, will more than cover the extra outlay, and I therefore trust for your Lordship's sanction thereto.

I have also to inform your Lordship that I have been induced at the suggestion of the Superintendent of Police, and recommendation of the Chief Magistrate, to authorize there will be a deficiency in the European force of 12 Constables, and it being exceedingly difficult to procure sober well-conducted Europeans to fill the vacancies, a
