Israel, sayas London contemporary, mourne the death of its great leader, Dr. Hormann Adler, Chief Babbi of the British Jows and, indeed, the grief of Israel will be shared by thousands of othors outside the ranks of Jewry who co admire the noble life of the man who did so much for bis vast community.
Dr.. Adler was something more thin Chist Itabbi of the British Jews: he was a guro in the national life of the past quarter of a century. Ho stood out, in the popular imagination, as the true bereditary type of the orthodox Jew, white hoariled and mild-eyed as the
patriarchs sof old, learned with the wisdom of the ancients, *
He was the representative of Jewry-there are other leaders, of course, lenders of the Portuguese, the Roform, and the Liberal ses tions of Jaduism; but, for the man in the street, the venerable Chief Rabbi, in his high velvet cap, was the leader of Israel.

THE CHIEF BABET,
Ho appeared at all great ceremonies of State, at all important meetings when every section of society was represented in some common cause for the goal of the people; and he was the monthpiece of the Jews at homo in voicing their homage or sympatlig in great matiore.
Maay have torn im-the old man whose shoulders were bowed with mach garning and study, whose beard, once red, was whitened with his tipo years of thros rooze and twelve whose eyes beamed benevolently behind gold rimmed glasses,
GENTLE PERSONALITY,
Those whose privilege it was to meet him must remember now the impression iley carried away with them of that personality in which patience, gentlenes and an all-abrasing sympathy were the dominant characteristics.
