A CRICKET PROBLEM.
(BY P. A. VAILE.)
Cricket is England's nationa! game. Nobody will deny that bowling is a very important part of that game, or that it is a matter of the atmest moment to a first-class bowler to know all that there is to be known about pro dasing swerve and break: yet, in this year of grace one thousand nine hundred and eleven, there is a means of producing swerve-and break which is practically unknown to cricketers. In order to make perfectly clear the nature of the spin required, I say xoay that the only difference between the overspin that gives no break and the overspin that gives both swerve and brosk is that, for obtaining swerve and break, the top of the spin, if I may so express it is, roughly speaking, two inches to either side of the top of the spin in pure overspin. This is a very rengh description, but it orpresses the outstanding difference much mora oloarly than if it were described in geometrical terms enriched by diagrams. The whole secret of break by overspin consiste in tilting the plane of spin to one-side er the other.
