BOLDIERS AND OPIUM SMOKERS.
There has been a great deal of illicit opium smacking lately in the Nam Hoi District, expo. cially at a town called Sai Chin. The day before yesterday a number of soldiers led by the district magistrate went to this place, where they demolished several opium divans and broke up the smoking requisites. Unfortunately they thou "turned their attention to the villagers, severn! of whose houses were pillaged. They also plundered a store called Fangki and then went back to the guard boat. By this time the are of the villagers had been aroused, and they went to the best in overwhelming numbers and domanded the return of the plunder. The magistrato, who had returned to the boat after the divane had boon destroyed, was the made aware of what bad happened, and he lost no tims
in making the plunderers restors their booty Eren then the irate villagers were hardly to be appeased, and it was only with great difenlty that the boat got away.
TO PREVENT PLAGUE,
There have been quite a quantity of dead is
discovered in the streets recently, and these are generally allowed to lie where they die and bergine offensive both to the senses of eight and amell. A citizen has just made the reasonable suggestion that the authorities should place in each street a fin receptacle wherein these dead rodents may be deposited. The Taotai of Police, who has charge of these matters, thinks that such a proveeding would be too expensive. He
