The societies represented were the Women's Trade Union League, the Anti-Sweating League, the National Federation of Women Workers, the Women's Labour League, the Women's Co-operative Guild, the National Association of Midrive, and the Women's Industrial Council.

Mire Mary R. Macarthur, of the National Federation of Women Workers, esid most of the women in her Federation were employed at a swented wage, and their wages were so low that they could not afford to pay a compulsory promiam. She thought the employer who paid the sweated wage should pay the weekly pra mium. The lower the wage, the more vulpable

Among the points pat by Miss Macarthur was one that no insurance premium shall be deducted from the wages of aweated workers where those wages are below the merest sub- sistence level, but that the whole premium, apart from the State contribution, should be paid by the employer.

Mins Macarthur also contended that as the women workers would contribute to insurance

between the ages of fourteen and twenty-three, and then leare work, perhaps, to get married, the Bill operated rather unfairly on woman com- pared with men.

"WITHOUT INQUIRY.”

Mr. Lloyd George said he complained of a statement of that Rort. It was made withcat the slightest inquiry, The Treasury had made inquiry among the most competent men, and they found that the liability under the Bill was

beavier than the contributions of the women.

Miss Macarthur said that she should prefer that the State should pay. If they were to ohose between the maternity benellt and the sickness benefit, they would prefer the sickness benefit. In conclusion, she said the union asked that employers sick clubs should be excluded from the insurance schomo as she feared the employers would see them as a menu of pre-Taka, torpedo bost destroyer, 305 tons, i.h.p. venting women being organised by trade unions. Owing to lask of time, the Chamellor was

unable to hear the case for the midwires, and promised them a separate deputation.

Mr. Lloyd George, in a general reply, said to him for some of the suggestions were
