Commonwealth on his way to England, for the purpose of advising them with regard to the organisation of Australia's defences. and LORD KITCHENER'S compliance with this wish gave counters.ce to the expect- ation that upon his return to London the | Government would offer to him some now War Office appointment affording full scope for the exercise of his unrivalled genius as a military organiser. The tope, however, was grievously disappointed. LORD KITCHENER was offered a sinecure in the Mediterranean which H... the Duxe of CONNAUGHT had resigned in disgust, because there was so little to do, and Lord KITCHENER ANяwered public expectation by declining to take up the post. Until the King entrusted the distinguished Field WATER Marshal with the responsibility for the military arrangements in Coronation wook, his chief occupation (if we may trust the cani caturist) has been the planting of cabbages: He had also become a railway director. Lord KITCHENER has been well described as. **e natural King," but England, which has sought to emulate China in certain other respects since the present Govermnent has been in office, has wel succeeded, in the case of Lord KITCHENER at least, in rivalling China is its treatment of its greatest men.
