THE SIGNIFICANT CIGARETTE.

BY GEORGE EPGAR

The careful student of current events will have noted from time to time, and as recently as a few days ago, that when an airman jast wriggles out of the grisly clutch of Death he acts up to a great tradition. If he has run into. bin house, knocked the roof off, and twisted saroplane into a tangle of scrap-iron and a heap of wooden splinters, before he climba from off the ruins and surveys the wreckage he pails out a carefully burnished case and nonchalantly lights a cigarette. It suggests a fine aplomb, nerve, detached indifference to death, and studied self-control. It always strikes me as being on excessively pleasing spectacle to ser the airman paffing a wreath of cigarette smoke into the jaws of the spectre who always larks behind our successful attempts to conqnor the air. It is almost ne nonchalant an altitudo as that of a certain d ing stage soldier who, in a brief moment of consciousness and with his last broath, gasped out a desire to know what won the Derby-

The odd part of the business is that we cannot to nonchalant with nicotine, in the fac of death or any sore trial of the flesh, with any other form of tobacco than the shreddet Vir- vinia or the aromatic Turkish weed rolled up in rice paper. An airman would not pose an bis twistel plno with such studied as if he bad to take out a poush and a pipe, knack the cob of the last smoke out on his heel, and the briar

from the pouch. This is one of the few remaining things that are impossible. One may be pathetic and sentimental with a pipe, and there is something about the gurgle of briar, its universal tendency to wheese to it self, that makes it so ptable in drums of the purely domestic typ An airman could not, in the same moment that be lights a cigarette, put on a two shilling Havana. The mere act of nipping the end and pulling off the band would spoil the pose. The ciger may suit the drama of the iron jaw, and play its part in a long-drawn-ont scene of tense blading. One

*

It is interesting to trace the cigaretto from the days of its incoming popularity to this its moment of triumph, when it has become the symbol of courageons uonobalance. In the early days of the ci arate it was undoubtedly. wicked. I am not quite sure, but I believe it was Mr. W. L. Abingdon who made the sigar- hpotto wicked, in thoas herois days when gallant William Tercise defed the world in Adelphi- drums. In thess days ono might smile and smile and ban villain, but no stage villain conk! deliver the gools, the conscyneness of sin forced in the overheated temporature of the mele- aramatic anthor's stady, without a cigarette. Then the oigarette, with no more apparent reason than is behind the street boy when lo turus from marbles to pogtops, endilenly became gay and symbolized the morey irresp-asibilitie of the adolescout. For instance, when thinge were going well and you went to Brighton, Boulogne, or Margate, you wars not completo. without a gigarette as part of your costume. was to exuberant youth what the straw in the mouth of the groom is to the

world of stable. One might as well wrak luto the Carlton II tel without money, or put up for slotion at the Athens without reputation, as have attempted to appar va a seaside pier without a sigaretio. To do so was a greater guarantee of staldness and advancing age than is a bald head, or whis kors that follow the shape of a wall selected lamb cutlet. I do not pretend to explain this tradi- tion beyoud hazarding the guess that the dose- lopment of the musical comedy form of enter tainment was responsible for it. On the magical comedy stage one cannot be guy and young without a cigarette any more than one can be mildly wicked without waring aloft an opty champagne glass. I do not know why this is; it is sufficient for me to know it is so...
