My Lord,

MAR 5
R548 17
Victoria, Honghong,
32 January.
1848.
I have received the enclosed Letter
from Mr R. Morgan, Clerk to the Auditor General, praying for some increase to his Salary and backed by a recommendation from the Auditor.
I might under ordinary circumstances have been induced to add £50 a year to Mr Morgan's Salary without reference home; but strictures have been passed many and far on the heavy expense of this Colony that it is my duty to make no augmentation of any consequence without previous sanction which I have to request to the above amount.

"The Earl Grey;
