The taste of the man who brought together this marvellous collection is impeccable, his connoisseurship, or that of those who have noted for him, is surprising. It should be stated, by way of preliminary, that this Mt. Rickard Bennett is in no way related to, r connected with, Sir William Bennett, the two specialists having only their passion for Chi- nese art in common. It must be owned that the wonderful group of porcelain now displayed is, on the whole, in quality to the William Bennett cpection, and in many respects, indred, avon to the great Salting collection, now the property of the uation. The latter is, of course, for vaster and more comprehensive, and it is unsurpassed, too, as regards quality in several Yet we doubt whether it can categories. produce anything to match in exquisiteness one or two oxamples in the present group. pretending to analyse completely the elaborats catalogue which has boca prepared, we may point out one very commonerror that of misdescribing in a good many instances the familiar prunus blossom as hawthora. This is not the place to discuss uico technical points, but wo may record our impression that some of the most perfect specimens classed here as Ming would more properly be put down as early K'ang-Hsi. with Chinese, as with European art, a corbain amount of fexibility in defining and measuring ont periods is indispensable. The world of lactors and art-lovers has lately bean greatly attracted towards the earlier Ming, the Sung, and the still earlier periods. No doubt there envelops and beautifies then an atmosphere of of romances and mystery, while the constant effort towards perfection gives just that charm which perfection hardly posseses, or, at any rate, does not long retain. Still, it may not bodoaied that we have here, in these periods of highest achievement, porcelain at its very climax of beauty and finish, showing a soprono masters of technique, a daring and yet a faultlessness which it would be vain to look for elsewhere.
