MR. BALFOUE ON IMPERIAL PREFERENCE.
· ALBERT HALL DEMONSTRATION,
STRAITS
The campaign in support of Imperial Pre-Per value each ference, which was opened last month at Har share £1. Calle chester, received a powerfal stimulos from the paid up are:- demonstration held in the Albert Hall, Loudon, on the 23rd alt.
Therecoeld be no stronger or more convinc- ing proof of the appeal of the policy of proferen- tial trade within the Empire, says The Timer, than that, on a beautiful May oveaing, and on evoting, too, of many social notions, have the masses and the classes should
common support united in showing their of it to the extent of filling the mat spaces of the Albert Ball. On the platform there was a large gathering representative of the Lords and Commons. The thros tiers of boxer were filled with ladies. The body of the ball-amphitheatre, balconies, and gallerios
were packed with men.
The telegram from Mr. Chumberlain, by the reading of which Lord Selborne, who presided, opened the procedings, was greeted with lond cheers. It urged that the Imperial Conference should be taken odraslegs of to enforce the the Dominion's offer of necosity of noceptin rest of the unity and Preference in the
strength of the Empire,
Mr. Balfour was secorded a stirring welcome on rising to speak, and the cheers were frequent and load throughout his thoughtful and grave aponch, which lasted three-quarters of an hour. Unless there was a change in this country' fiscal policy of free imports, he said, he foresaw from the most-favoured nation treatment dis astrous ecorequeness either to our political relations with the Dominions or to our com mercial relations with foreign countries Ho pointed that owing to the different inter- pretation given to ment-favoured-nation troa ment by England and by the United States, if the Reciprocal Azreement between Canada and America were concluded. Canada must extend the trade advantages she gave to America to ollier countries having most-favoured-nation treating with England, while Amarica world re serve entirely to herself such gains as she abtained froin Canada.
It was inevitable in these circumstances that the self-governing Dominions would in time be driven to say to the Mother Country. "I you will not make the preferential bargain with us that wo offer, give as a free hand to nako bargains ourselves with the many suitors who come to our doors with favours to offer in return for our trade." What answer, asked Mr. Balfour, was this Free Trade Government to give if it were still in office-bich Heaven forbid when the Dominions and that re quest? If it were then decided to "denounce these most favoured-nation treaties the result would be that Free Trade, instead of establish ing peace and good will on ourth, would lead to quarrels with foreign nationsand the dislocation of our world-wide trade. All these troublen, which the future had in store for us, might have been avoided if the present Government had but show a little foresight and a little patriotismo.
Thus Mr. Balfour advanced through a series
of masterly arguments tos peroration, delivered with great fervour and energy, which caught the audience and swept them to their foot. It was ant yet too late, he said, to avert the coming of the dark fature which he had piotarel. If this country cou
could freely discuss with the Dom- inion Premiers, assembled at the Imperial Con- the of policy ference, the question of the fiscal Empire, he believed that trade relations could be made with all parts of the Empire which, while mutually advantageons to all concerned. would obviste the perils that surely awaited us if the Government were to continue, imponitent and blind, on their ancient and worn-out fzcul courses
A STARTLING STATEMENT.
A startling statement was made recently in a Court, when a witness said, that in his line of business, it was the rule always to overstats the claims of the goods advertised! There may bo articles on the market which would not sell if their claims were not overstated, but people of them. There is no need to should fight shy overstate the claims of a genuine, well-proved article, and that is why the plain truth about Mother Seigel's Syrup is always suficient!
All that Mother Seigel's Syrap does is to tone up and strengthen the stomach, and to stimulate the action of the Ever and bowels in the healthy, natural way. The result is plain. When this

I was hale and hearty until about a year ago, when I began to be troubled with Indigestion. The pains in my chest and stomach were so bad that it was as much as I could do to crawl about, sad many a time, on my way home from work, I have been obliged to sit down and rest by the FAR CATHAT roadside. My appetite quite left me, and the little which I forced myself to eat my stomach was too weak to retain for more than an hour er so, and was vomited without having done me Any good.
