THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, JUNE 18TH, 1911.

THE GERMAN EMPEROR'S VISIT TO ENGLAND,

The Times of the 20th uit had the following leading article on the visit of the Gorman Em peror to England :--

Today w farewell to the German Em..

- May, peror and Empress and to the young Prinesas, who have been the guests of the King and Quson since Monday last We trust that they have received from their stay in London as mash pleasure as they have given, for that, beyond question, has been groot and widespread. Bright and genial weather, more like the May of the pools than the May of common ex- perience, he bud for its counterpart a bright and genial welcome offered to the Importa! gucate by all classes of English people. The great ceremony of Tuesday, the main object of the Emperor's journey, was carried through under the best possible conditions and it has been allowed by outertainments in the Palace and in the cases of prominent people, bringing Their Majesties into frioadly con tact with much that is best in English society and with a number of our leading men. These gatherings have been all the more enjoyable since the visit, being private, was

wholly without State; and it must have been a pleasant change for the Emperor, who at home in

aldom pat of aniform, to wear civilian dress. He has taken us as we are, in our habit as we live. He and the Empress bare bad sight-seeing in plenty, from the picture gallaries and the Automobile Club to the birds and lions of the Regent's Park. They have been to the theatre, to “command night" of the oldest of our play houses, where they saw a play famous in the days of our grandfathers, noted by such a cast- 81 our grandfathers could never have brought together. Swift motor-cars have taken them to Windson between lachenn and dinner, and enabled them both to honour the memory of Qeoen Victoria and King Edward and to sujog a brief glimpse of the revived glories of thi Castle, At the same time, their eagerness to see as much as the brief holiday allowed has boou equalled by the popular eagerness to ded and great Their Majestia, Crowds have lined (the streets, and the choirs of the people havo haen sordial and spontaneoas. All have been glad to welcome no only the Head of a great nation, but the cousin of the King and the aldest grandson of Queen Victoria.
