CHURCH AND STATE IN PORTUGAL.

THE SEPARATION DECREE.

(BY A CORUMSPOEDENT OF “THE TIMES.")

Tho decree which movers the Church from the State in Portugal is the lant and culminat ing measure of the notable series which has issued from the fertile legislative brain of Senhor Alfonso Cesta Under the guise at separating Church and State this messure deprives religions servioss and congregations of all liberty, and, indeed, seems to aim at the suppression of religion altogether. Its opening artide [gussantess full liberty of con- selonos to all Portuguese citizens, its second decrees that the Roman Catholic religion shall cease to be that of the State, and recognises sa equally authorized all Churohes and religious coxfordions. Its third article provides that benceforth no one shall be persecuted for religions motives. Its fearth decrees that with the coming July 1 all State payments for the melutenance and expenses of worship shall conee, its fifth that all impositions to meet then shall also end. In the opinion of Mr. S. F. Cody we shall have, in about ten years' time, a large passenger carrying aeroplane, able to compete anciensfully with steamers and trains. But for the next four or five years seroplating will become daily more dangerous, owing to the experimente which must he made towards conquering very strong winds When this end is attained, the danger element is, to a great extent, eliminated.
