Upen the osteome of the Government's sails against the Standard Oil and American Tobacco Companies deponds, in the belief of Wall-street, the fioancial and commercial ont- look of this country. These suits are still before the United States Supreme Court. Until they
of are settled there can be no resumption Botivity lu the security markets or in general busineex,
What has restricted trade on the Stock Extrong changs and curtailed jeonoral business daring the past few months bes not bean so much the question as to whether the Supreme Court would decide these giant Trust cases against both compa ies as the question bow an unfavourable decision might affect the status of the other. great corporations under the Sherman Anti- Trust laws.
The chief anxiety is felt as to whether the highest court in the fan- will interpret the Inv to show other larga corporations such as the Steel Trust and the so-called Beef Trast, the in which they can continue to do business without fear of being involved in Government prosecutions. The Government, through its Attorney-General's
has for the last department, three
or four years been stigmatising them as conspiraters and moncplics, and as tradi gin defiance of the Sherman Anti-Trust las. The question at isane, then, is not the destruc ion or confiscation of property. It concerns rather the methods of business adopted by there large industrial corporations; and whether it will be necessary, as the result of the Supreme Court's devisions in the test cases, either to amend the
Sherman Anti-Trust laws or to pass a new Federal Incorporation Law, under which he great companies could trade with supervision by the Federal Government.
AN IDLE 810SK EXCHANGE,
By reason of the uncertainty on theso points business on the Stock Exchange has boon reduced during the past month to about the lowest level on record. The boldest operators Dre ind sposed to eutor in a fresh commitments till the decisions have been givan, Concern in the finding of the court has extended to business intorosta throughout the country in every department of trade. Because of this there has been a gradual "slowing down" in every branch of industry doring the past six months. The prosent disposition is to do as little as possible in the way of now business until then decisions are definitely out of the way,
Bo vital is the importanes of the cases, so volumionus the cridouce, covering, os hear, nearly 22,000 pages, that the court has taken
longer time to study them and give us to
than it did in the famons Northern Securities the combination of the Northern Pacife, Great suit. This, it will be remembered, concerned Northern, and Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railways, the fight over which among the powerful railway and Stock Exchange in forests caused the great financial paste of 1901.
The history of the great Staadard Oil case is as follows: In December, 1903, the Supreme Court of Missouri forbade the Standard Of Cam pany to do business in that State. On May 2, 1910, the United States Supreme Court con firmed a judgment of the Tennessee une Court forbidding the company to do

[Reuter bus telegraphed that it was given on the 15th inst. and confirms the decision of the Court below.--ED,, H.D.P.]
The only complete f
& financial report the Stan. dard Oil Company published was issued in Dec. ember, 1905. It showed profits for the rear of over £16,600,000. In dividends it paid that year £7,800,000, with a surplus to its credit at the close of the year amounting to £8,800,000. The profit and loss surplus account in its balance-sheet was estimated at £52,200,000.
Its parnings from 1882 to 1901 have beou calculated at £91,20 000, with dividends paid of £70,200,000. From 1902 to 1903 its earn ings have broz variously estimated at from £12,800,000 to £17,000.000, and its dividends at from £7,600,000 to £8,800,000. It is said to control about sixtyther companies whose stock is owned direct by it, and about seventy. other companies whose stock is owned by its
absidiaries.
Should the Supreme Court sustain the decision of the lower court and order its dissointion, the company would have to be reorganised to do business under the Sherman Anti-Trust lawa, For the past nine months reports have been reaching Wall-street and fusncial circles that the Standard Oll interests, who dominate the management of this vast system of businesses, anticipato an unfavoura le decision from the Supreme Court. The secretary of the company. however, only a fortnight ago officially denied a statement, frequently repeated, that the officers of the company had prepared a comprehensive scheme for the immediate conduct of its affairs

The fundamental conditions are now so strong, the method of transacting business has been so much improved, than adverse decisions in asch vase are likely to exort nothing more than a sentimental influence on the security market. It is well known that the judgment of the Supreme Court cannot destroy or confiscate the property of those Trusts any more than it did In the Northern Securities case. In that in- stance the Supreme Court merely ordered the dissolution of the holding company, no as to conform with the laws governing inter-State commerce and the Sherman Anti-Trust laws.
