Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your dispatch accompanied by a copy of that which Lord Grey addressed to the Governor of Hong Kong, dated December last, on the subject of my leave of absence.

I beg leave respectfully to submit, for Lordship's information, the enclosed medical opinion by Dr. B. Brodie & Dr. Alexander, with the request that his Lordship will not oblige me to relinquish any office in Hong Kong until after the expiration of a month, the period pointed out by this opinion for further examination.

I ask this the more readily as my case is not anomalous, as was stated to the Colonial Office;
