It is very desirable that the experience ihould be turned to account by following up without delay the succosses they have obtained. -Resolution of the eighth International Geo- graphic Congress at New York.
Antarotic oxploration inevitably suggests the South Pole All the revant expeditions have. pads the Pole their object, Bat there is a wide field for valuable work quite apart from that. There is a great continent to be mapped a continent which may be as rich in precious
as the North Polar region of Alasks minerala a conlinout where there is almost certainly coal in vast quantities, which it would not be difficult to get but..

It is to the interest of the world at large that this continent should be explored. But it is especially to the interest of Australasia, because Australia and Now Zealand lie to near. From Hobart (Tasmania) the voyage to the Antarctic coast is only one of 1,500 miles. Antarotis ozpeditions, has never sent out one of its own. At last it feels
enough to do so. Next, November Dr. Douglas Merson, a young professer of geology at Adelaide, who was with the Shackletou Expedition, will start witli a scientifle party to investigate the 2,000 miles of const which lie nearest to Australocis, and which are expected to yield valuable results.
MAGNETISM MYSTERY.
ли
Dr. H. R. Mill in his famousSiege of the South Pole" apoke of this coast line as a field. for exploration whore very usefal scientific work could be done. Dr. Mawson, who is at this moment in London, is convinced that with the £40,000 which is being raised for him and with twenty months of steady toil he can add very considerably to our knowledge of this lone, white land and especially bonolit Australasia.
You doe," he said, as we. with Sir Ernest Shackleton, pored over maps spread out en
office table, "Australia and New Zea land got their weather from the south. In order to predict it successfully they must know what the elizate is doing on the Antarctic continent.
Seconally. there are 3.0 enormous auniber of seals and whales towa hore from which Australinus might win great gains. Thirdly, there are possibilities of cont rocious metals being found. Fourthly, we arri shall take very careful magnetic observations, by which we shall help to make the compass more useful to sailors and possibly to clear up what is Htill the
of the mart's mystery
magnetism. "Frimarily our work is to be geographic- that is, mapping. But it has all these practical, material ailes it as well. Looking forward
to to it? I should rather think I am. Everyone who has been in the Autarctic wants to go back. It's the healthiest place in the world. Here's another possibility-health resorts and winter sports on this coast for Australians "No, I an not joking. I don't see why they shouldn't grow up in that sunny, germ-fros atmosphers.

PLAN OF THE EXPÉDITION. Except for a few Froachaen in 1840 no human being has over sat foot on this ecast. It, has not even been sighted from a ship sinco 1854. It is supposed to be mountainous. YOR musta't suppose tag Antarotio is just a fat T sheet of ice. That is only true of the interior. There are very high ranges of rocky mountains in other parts of this huge continent, which is as big as Australia and Earops put together.
