Fla Rhodesia, A Journey through Southern Africa. (With 144 Illustrations and Two Mapa). By CHARLOTTE MANSFIELD. Lon Jou Stenloy Paul & Co.
When it was announced, some three years ago, that Miss Manaflold,,unaccompanied by any white compaulou, intended to make the journoy hitherto uvachieved by man or woman, from
·Capetown to Cairo, many of us, indved most of us, were incredulous, and justly so. With the "trials and tribulations of Mango Park, Living- stone, Stanley and other great missionaries and travellers in the wilds of Darkest Africa wo were more or less familiar, and we doubted the feasibility of any woman encorajasing such a journoy, even after making allowance for tho - enormous clianges that had been wrought in Southern and Central Africa in the course of the last decade. -Ladies like Imbella Bird and Mary Kingsley had shown what bravo women - could do when they set their hearts do: wander in the world's and monks and among an. civilized or semi-ofvilised rages, bul, even so, the tank not herself by Miss Mansfield was so stupenduris that wo refused to believe that she was in saranet. That she was in earnest was proved, however, in due course. That she was suc cossful is to le regrottod. She displayed much resource, great.courage, and, trașelled over sparsely populated areas, occompanied only by. her native carriors, but, after all, sho nover got beyond tracks alfendly well known to the white man, and brings to us no startling, information about the country 01 the people or the *country's resoGTCEN The trip from Capetown to Cairo was afterwards accomplished by Professor Beattie, who she encountered in Randeria. Mia Mansfield was provented by the sleeping sickness regulations from crossing the boundary from British to German territory, and from what she tells us of her condition in the latter stages of her journey to the coast, wo cannot help thinking timt the officials responsible for diverting her frein, her original Intention ars to be commended for exercising a wise
It must
not be immagine that Miss Mansfield's expedition was altogether a failors. She is successful in conveying to us what conditions provail in Rhodia under British rule, and certainly draws a most tructive pictors of the country as amitable place for British pioneers possessid of the soullest capital, Bho advocates emigration to Central Africa for the surplus women of England and we are uptonished somewhat, when we torn over in our mind what sho says on this point, that she was allowed to leave the country un married. But perhaps we are trading on sucrul ground. Perhaps Miss Mane Bell is engaged upon her trousseau at this very momeat, and we shall not be astonished if we soo the announcement in the Home nowspapers that the intrepid traveller laas gone back to Ithodenis will her banjo to charm away the loneliness of come of the handsome pioneer bachelors alio encountered. in bor itinerary from Bulawayo to Blantyre,
She has produced a handrosse book, cliária. ingly written, full of fine descriptive passages and evidement of eise observation, while the illustrations, some from her own are exquisite sul muko a wish to follow on the trail she has blazed." She writes with humour, sxeapt, when she deals with the

The Impulse to Success.
Emerson was a great thinker and a wise philosopher. When therefore he lays it down that "if a man of ability should give you his honest experience, you would find that he owed more impulse to books than to living -minds,' we may agree with him unhesitatingly.

and in soeking asylum have found if under the blue sky of Rhodesia. From what we bare. heard from them and from what we have road in diss Mansfield's book, we are not astonished. Here is a white man's country, if over there was one. Here is a country of rest possibilities awaiting the adreat of the white man, with his capital and energy and intelligenco, to convert it into on earthly Paradise. The authoress presents its charms in picturesque English and with a delightful literary grace, and if desire is created for faller information by her facile pen we have no doubt the Rhodesian authori. ties, who have a bureau in the strand for die sominating information, will gladly supply it to intending settlers.
Misa Mansfield is to ha, congratulated ̧ ́upon being so well served by her publishers in the form her book has taken, and the publishers on: having such an attractive book, breathing the writer's personality, to place before the public,
