SUGGESTIONS.

[TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKONG DAILY FRESS."]

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, APRIL 8гm, 1911.

DEA Bre,-I have read with intorest the various letters which have appeared in regard to the suggested Memorial of the Coronation.

There is one point that does not seem to have been touched upon: that is, the question as to whether a Memorial is really required or

necessary.

From time to time I have reported in this' column the horrible acts of brigandage done by robbors in many parts of this province, expecial- ly in the more remote distriots where the arm of the law is more than usually work. To show the terrible state of affairs that exists in some of these places, it is only necessary to refer to a suggestion which has just been laid before the Viceroy. The scheme is, that as the places are no infestal with robbers and as these mis-

(6) All men who have been found to have been abducted uro to be at duce seat back to their native villages.

FOREIGNERS AND PROPERTY.''

It is said that according to curtain Tranties no foreigner is allowed to acquire landed property in this Province, but it has been found that in several instances this rule has been broken and that foreiners have become possessed of land. The Viceroy fears that there will thus be caused friction between foreigners and natives which may even lead to serions díptomatio questions being rained. H.F. has therefore given orders that in future the rule must be strictly obeyed and that in all cases persone applying for title deeds must produce evidence that they are pure Chinese.

SCHOOLS NOT REQUIRED.

Old styles and modes of thought die hard in China, and notwithstanding the wonderful growth of "western education" in this province yet in some of the villages these aw-fashioned school are locked upon with much disfavour. Some time ago a school was established under modern principles in a place called Kang Yik. This school greatly annoyed some of the con- servative "elders." A day or two ego the new school was stormed by a gang of rouths and the place seriously damaged. All the tonehors suffered bodily injury and some of the scholars were also hurt. The authorities intend to take the matter up and deal severely with those

concerned.

BUILDINGS COLLAPSE.

A very serious accident occurred on the night of the jst inst., when a big building known as Tin Shing in Tak Hing Streetcollapsed. The collapse. also wased the fall of a neighbouring house called Choung Li. More than twelve persons were sleeping in the former house and all were injured, four being hurt so seriously that they were taken to hospital, where it is. foared they will die. On the same night a pork shop near the Kwai Tak gate collapsed, and though the occupants escaped serious injury a passerby named Fan was severely wounded by falling

débris.

STEALING FALSE TEETH.

An old lady living in Hlug Yiu Fong was known to be the possenser of several gold false teeth. Three thievas got to hour of t is and lay in wait for the old damne. They were suo- cesfal in surprising her and one of the three pushad bor to the ground while the others formed the gold tooth from her mouth. The poor woman endeavoured to ery out, but ber meath was so hurt that she was unable to call aistance. The Thieves made off and they have doubtless turned the teeth inte money ere now. GUARDS AND POLICE.

Last night a number of the Provincial Trea- surer's bodyguards caused an obstruction in front of the Y.M.C.A. The policeman on duty told them to move on, but they at once. began to make trouble, saying that a policeman had no right to interfere with softiers. They then gave the unlucky policeman an un- merciful beating and the bystanders became sery excited. For a time it looked as if thore. was going to be a from fight, but at the crucial moment a body of patrols came up and saved the situation.
