REVIEWS.
The Law of Trade Marke. lly C. D. WILKINSON. Hongkong: Kelly & Walsh. The inerentile community owes to Mr. Wilkinson a substantial debt of gratitude for the production of a book which must prove of great service to all who are concerned. with the registration and protection of trade marks. The sale of such a work is nacos- arily a restrictid ogs, and the monetary rewards are therefore not likes to adequately compensate the author for the amount of time sad labour hỏ must have devoted to its produc tion. In a short introduction to the work Mr Wilkinson las skotched the laws of China, Japan and the Philippine Islands so far as they relate to the status of foreigu proprietors of trade marks in those countries, and the remainder of this book of 250 closely printed pages deals with the Trade Marks Ordinanco of Hongkong. The entire Ordinans is repro. Inced and to each clauso is added vory full,
· explanations, supported in numborless instances by judicial decisions. Section 9, which lays down the essential particulars that a registrate wade-mark must contain 'or consist of is dis- essed in 22 pages. The rales made by the Governor-in-Council, the solodules of foos, and
the Merohandise Marks Ordinance 1890, are also reproduced in the book, as well as eclection of important decisions on trade-mark law. Au excellent index adile mach to its valus.
The Relief of Chitral. By Captain G. J
YOUNGHUSBAND, Quo's Own Corps of Guides, and. Colonel Sir FRANCIA YOUNGHUSBAND, K.CIE, Indian Staff Corps. With Map and Illustrations Loadou : Macmillan & Co., 1910:
Well dong the writer remember; while crÓNA. Ing Hongkong Harbour in March, 1895, show. ing Major Faithfull, the second-in-command- of the Hongkong Regiment, a telograms, jusį Pocetvot, onouncing & serions prising of the native tribes on the north-west frontier of India, and the anxiety that officer expressed at the news. The mikt ry and political situa flon was indeed a serious one, and had it not boon for the prompt action of the Indian auth- oritles, leading to the relief of Surgeon-Major Robertson at Chitral, there is no doubt that the hostility to British inflñenco woudt, hato aproad rapidly amongst the hill tribesmen of this wild région and the loss of life would have been even greater than it was. In this small volume the story of the relief of Chitral is told with spirited and graphic olearness. There is no need at this time of the day to dwell upon tholiterary ability | of these two brilliant brothers, members of a family whose names are interwoven with the history of India since it came auder British dominion. Brave deeds such as we expect from British officers are here recorded with much simplicity, almost as a matter of coures, and it is easy to understand, from a peruani of those pages, how it is that British and native troops, wbon lad by such men, wie batles and Tween an enemy before them. Soldiers will fad a special pleasure in reading this narrative It is not too technical, however, for the average man who has not smelled powder.. It lets in a sidelight upon the party politics of the billy ragions that separate India from Russia, and shows how the right of snecassion is safeguarded by the man who has the might. The fact that the book has already passed through six editions is evidence that the public have been apprecia. tive of its merits, two of which are that it is not 400 long and it is never tiresom
