In the State Legislature at Boston last month the Taxation Committee introduced a Bill for the tamtion of bachelors, and there was considerable amusement when it was found that the casare provided for the support of spinsters at the expanse of the males responsible for their state of single blessedness." LUNAOY AT EVENING, PARTIES, Entertaining and characteristic strictures upon the tragio recitation, as known to the average evening party, were made at the Little Theatre recently by Mr. W. H. Yeate in the course of a causeris upon the " Art of Speech." "Among the things that I most abhor," said Mr. Yopte, is the tragic drawing-room reoita tion. The intensity of emotion alike in'audience and speaker necessary to the tragic spirit is o thing that cannot be manufactured in a moment. It needs the most careful art to get the right mood, the right atmosphere At an evening party it is possible that a little story might be deftly told, an appropriate poom recited But the fragio fragment, barted anexpectedly by someone standing in the middle of the carpat to a circle of people who are pausing ill at ease in the midst of trivial gossip as they stand or sit around the wall, is meaningless and abominable. If it has any meaning at all, if it can only mean that one member of the com pany has suddenly gone raving mad."
One great foo of the "art of speech" was, he considered, the tendency to humanitarianism--- the desire to have song praclical effect, to do some practical good. This interfered with the puré expression of emotion. Another deadly foo was music,We poets," he said, "are being crushed out of oxistance by the brass band and the gramophone. In the modern lyric the words are of secondary importance. Sometimes they
