Wounds in War The Mechanism of their Production and their Treatment. By COLONEL STEVENSON, CR, KH, BAM.C (retired) London: Longmans & Co
This is the third edition of a book which appeared in 1897-Since theu antiseptic methods and modern principles of treatment have been applied to wounds produced by modern weapons ofligh velocity and stall bore, for not only has the art of surgery been revelationized within recent years, but also the art of war The book opons with a dosoription of the different arms employed in warfars, from side arms, the sword and tayonet, to portable firearms and missiles. It in ovident that in warfare of the present- day, whon long xango fighting is the rale, the side arm is not such an efficient weapon except in hand-to-hand fghte auch ay. in cavalry encounters, surprises, night attacke, and the assault of entronched positions. In the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05 such wounds in the Russian side wore 1.7 per cent. and on the Japaness sido 2.2 per cent. of all wounds. The use of firearme in war dates back to the fifteenth century, the "hand gun" coming into practical use in 1446. The author trace; the evolution of firearms from the hand gun through the matoblock, the snapbance to the mere modern flint-look, and from that to the use of a fulminating powder and the adoption of
