STORIES FROM THE MAGAZINES.
WORSE THAN Á DIVIDED SKIET! gẫn: Cornhill" Magazine for January Miss Margaret L. Woods tells the following story -- Not long ago a Mashorn chief earnostly bo sought a missionary to give him a pair of trousers, which a missionary, with some mluot anco, did. On the following Sunday, who the service was in full swing, this church door opened and the chief advanced up the afels slowly and with majestic port, wearing one half of the trousors. He had shared the pair with his brother.
HOT EFFECT DE AN ICE, Another story told by Mr. Goldwin Smith je the following on the authority of Lord Lyons. Typos gave a diplomatic dinner to propitiate an ofonded Oriental. There was an iord pudding, which, being takou to the guest of honour first, he, seeing something unctuons, helped himself to it and put a large piece in his month. He jumped up, furious, spluttering, and rashed out of the room. Lyons followed and found him implacable. His mouth was burnb, it was an abominable trick; else why had the pulding been taken to him Brat? He went away unap poused, and diplomacy missed its mark.
FOR ORNAMENT, BUT NOT FOR, USE
A writer in the Jamiary Blackwood talls a story told many years ago in his hearing by Anthony Trollopo
Having bought what he onsidered rather an expensive utabrella on Monday, he took it back. to the shop before the end of the week and invited the vendor to Inspect its condition.
Look at this thing that I paid two guineas for at the beginning of the week."-
The shopinan unfolded the umbrella and mibjected it to a lengthy examination.
"Do you know, sir," he said at last," it looks I hardly like to suggest anal a thing-bat yes, it really does look us if you had boon hold. ing it up in the rain.
"Of course I have," admitted the astonished novelist.
"Oh! woll, sir, coully! If you will treat a good umbrella like that, what can you expect ?
HUNTING PARSON AND HIS BISHDE. Io the Canadian Magazine there are Memories of my home" by the late Goldwin Smith His early home was at Mortimer, sight miles from Reading. One of his stories is the following-

The reason for giving this advantage to ships on the now routes, says the San Francisco Chronicle, is that trafle existing and likely to be developed on these now routes during the life. of the contract would not justify, in addition to: the 'ma contract, building and oporating what are considered first-class ships on the Atlantió. The second-class ships, however, would be ad- qualofor auxiliary services in the Navy, but not for scout ships. The third class ships, to which $2 per mile is to be paid, would be useful for minor naval servico in time of war. The ships are to be built according to certain requirements, and to be available for Government service when needed. Tho opposition which this common-sense moonure has met is a curious instance of popular misapprehension and prejudice which it has been Impossible to remove, or oren to abato, The parts of the United States which will be most benefited by the service are those in which pro- duction is grastost, whether of food and raw materials or of manufactures. Unquestionably those are in the grunt Mississippi valley that all the opposition contras. Nine-tenths of the people imagine, and cannot be induced to believe otherwise, that this law is mainly for the benefit of ship builders and ship owners. It should be obvious that the building. and operating of two or three dozen ships would not of itself induce such efforts as have boon made for years to secure these postal contracts: Nor is an industry which has a monopoly of our enormous constwise traffic in a position to ask for mali special favours. What is wanted, and all that is wanted, by nine-tenths of those who favour this bill, is markets in and commerce with porta in undeveloped countries which we have not now, and shall never get, except by regular mail steamship service, whose early CALLING AT NAPLES, GENOA, ALGIERS, GIBRALTAR AND SOUTHAMPTON
IN 25 DAYS TO ITALY
years must be sustained by payments for mail service in excess of what would be earned at the regular pound rafe of compensation. And those most concerned are those who have the largest surpluses to sell, and the most money for purchases. Of course, to the extent that it Teaches, it will be a benefit to shipbuilders. including employers and workmen.
The bill now goes to the House. What -chance it lus there probably depends on the disposition of the insurgents and the action of the Committee on Rules Similar bills have passed the House in previous Congresses only to be lost in the Sonate.
