ATLANTIS IN SOUTHERN NIGERIA.

CHARGES AGAINST BEHITISH OFFICIALE.

The rumour that the German explorer Dr. Leo Frobenius had hit upon traces of the mythical Atlantis of the ancients in Southern Nigeria is explained by the publication of letters from the explorer to friends in Germany, in which be plaims to have discovereil remains of an ancient civilisation in the Boain district.

Dr. Frobenia makes a vicious attack upon the British officials of the Colony for depriving him of the fruits of his inbours. Writing from Illai on December 7, Dr. Frobenins says:

I have made an incredible discovery, for in West Africs I have found traces of a high and extremely ancient urban sivilisation. I am having excavations made and am searching the Whole neighbourhood I have unearthed Wonderfully worked quartz pillars, remains of granite figaros a yard high, burnt clay portraits. of classic bounty, ami vessels and fragments of pottery splendidly overlaid with glass of various colours. The main thing is that I have found the place where, all the treasures are buried about thros yards below the surface. Most of the things are in pieces, but so beautiful that they can properly be compared with rolics of classical antiquity."

In another letter the exploror mentions that hischiof find is a hollow bronze cost of a bead Bo'beautiful that anyone would sat it down as

The news of my discovery of a city of ancient Atlantis reschel the English. My lottor of Desember 11 was seized and sent back to me. SEA POWER IN THE PACIFIC.

THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS.

In regard to the Galapagos Islands, which the United States are at prosent proposing to pu chase as a naval base, it may be recalled that although the group has been well enough known. to Europe since Darwin visited them un his memorable voyage in the Beagle, recent events inve given thou further prouineneo from the si ratogical point of view. More than twenty- Are years ago their value in connection with the Panama Canal was foreseen, and a Governor had was appointed by Ecuador, which Runexed them as far back as 1832, and still maintains a conviot settlementthere. They aro mainly interesting to Great Britain and hor Dominions Beyond the Seas, on a Morning Post representative was reminded yesterday by gentleman with a special knowledge of condi tions on the Pacific Coast, by reason of the dition they openpy. They he on the route to the Dominions that will be opened out by the Panama Concl, and they would provide an excellent qualing station Their possession by the United States would involve not only an American outpost covering the Panama Canal, but also the prevention of their occupation by

by possible hostile Power.

The Archipelago consists of several islands, some of which attain an elevation of 2,500ft, The total land area is a little under 3,000 square miles, but tauol of the land, being of volcanis origin, is bare and desolate and unproductive. Darwin suid that it reminded him of the waste heaps to be seen outside the ironworks of Staffordshire. The isolation of the islands from the neighbouring continent has led to the production of many curious species which offer problems for the study of naturalists. The. islands are most famous, perhaps, for the 'gicat tortoises, the seven species of which are indi genous, and ench is confined to its own islet, Some of them requiro as many as eight men to lift thom. Darwin was not doutent with what the Governor of the islands told him about themo giant reptiles, but experimented for himself in ascertaining the rate at which they travolled over land, allowing a little time for meals," as he said, and he also tested their bardness of bearing by stealing up behind and stepping on to the reptile's back. The islands also contain a peculiar geaus of lizards, and half the flors is known elsewhere. Mairy tropical fruits aro found growing will, The commercial value of

tho islands lies in the exports of gunas and orchilla moss, which are sont chiefly to Europe. The archipelago has been the scene of many soientific investigations, one of which, about. fourteen years ago, was specially undertaken at the instance of the Hon. Walter Rothschild,
