Of all these modes of The tailer who firstcontrived a cost and skirtin decoration none need more careful treatment such a manner as to make it attractive deserves, than the last. It was in the late eighties that the the furore for buttons which ranged but

matter for for "covert costs," which had been worn by the inarliatio fashion, and it is a most feminine of women with the most feminine wegret that it should have been so quickly of dresses. No doubt it was the success of those revived. However, many of the beat of the covert doats which inspired some enterprising new models are designed with due independ designer to create a complete cotims which, once of this ides, so that oven she who has most while embodying all the utility of the modern respect for the new modes may at least escape masculine mode, should yet appeal to the whole its thraldom. For example, only one braided body of women. First ap earing ia blus aerge button is to be noted on an attractive, dress and afterwards in every description of cloth and recently designed for the Rivier. Fine cloth. twood, this type of costume tailleur depended for in an opal shade of grey is the material chosen for it. a touch of passementerie on the collar, its early success entirely upon its "ent." Its essential note was extreme severity which allowed revers and calls of gry satin, this ons baiton, no trimming save verkapas few rows of stitching rich with braid, and the cords on which it and a velvet collar. Thors wera instances when depends to fasten the little out-away coat are it was finished with a double-breasted waisteost the only decorations to be seen in front. At the back, however, a wide band of braid era- of a contrasting material, asnally of. check of s somewhat "horsey" type; at others the waistbroidery emphasizes the high waist, and this coat was replaced by a plain shirt of white or ocured linen, which was worn with a stiff linen collar and black or dark blue tie.
tand is repeated on the sides of the skirt just above the hom. There are instances when the panel straady alluded to develops in front into a tablier, either real or simulated, and, when designed with the severity demanded by the tailor-made, the effect is deserving of attention. It was decidedly well expressed in a gazelle. coloured eloth, when it fell straight from the waist to a point which reached to the hem. So mach of the aides as wore visible were closely kilted, but the back was arranged with a straiuht panel held at the waist and the hea by round buttons of silver. On another skiet along and straight tablier was merely simulated by the overlaying of seams, and it appeared to be fastened on the hips by buttons. Something of the same ides dietingished a Riviera dress of very fine serge in that beautiful shade known as rose de bois. The panier, here again only suggested, was caught at the hem with dre buttons covered with self-coloured passe- mentorie. Nothing else broke the fine lines of the well-out skirt, The Out WAR fitted with a round collar fastened on the shoulders with thres of the passomentario but- tons, which slso held the closely fitting long
THE ORIGINAL TYPE. When wo oo aider the transitory nature of frations in women's dross, it is remarkable that the contume tailleur in this coat and skirt form. should still persist. For the same reason it is not remarkable that it should have evolved into something far more magnificent than it was when first introduced. As Marcel Prévost has written, "Il coulera des siècles encurs avant que l'Eve civilisco se desinteresse de sa porare, Da même n'y prête qu'aus attention momen. tanée, facilement distraite, comme fout les hommes," And so long as she does maks an important study of dress there will always be found there who will impel her to vary old fash. ions, or to adopt those which are now. The rule oven applies to the rough or hoary coat and skirt made for country wear. On this, which most olosely adheres to the original type, there are to be noted continual changes in eat, and afeeling for more elaboration in trimming. The latter is, of course, severe in ite treatm nt and is of the nature of bands and buttone of leather, strappings of the material, simple braide, revors. and so forth. It was therefore inovic able that, oo its adoption for town waar, the costume tailleur should become increasingly elshorste; until eron the richest of silks and satins and velvets are considered none too good for its fashioning. It is almost unnecessary to point out that recently velvet has been the modish material for the coat and skirt. Bat as our thoughts turn towarde the coming of spring, satius and eil s and fine clutha will prove more attrative. And of those no doubt Batin will at first rule pre-eminent. The colour of the satin chosen will depend upon the occs- sion denunding the dress. Black or dark blas, the latter in a tone sabdued by a hint of grey, are both to be recommended for this loud of eunless days; they also promise to become. quite a livery on the Riviera. But for a fall. dress ocension in town, and for any normal day in the South, grey satin, or a warm shade of bisonit, may safely be chosen by any woman to whom these coleurs are becoming. When writ ing "grey," however, I have in mind none of such dall shades as are known as slate or iron rey, but those which are as soft in tone as is the grey on spireon's wing, or as brilliant with light as is silver. So rich a material demanda little ornamentation; and the now merles enforco duo simplicity. Many a coat is suficiently de- oorativo in itself, because it is uontrived in pieces and panels dovetailed into one apother, and out. lined by fine pipings of satin.”
NEW DEVELOPMENTS.
The sauno ides is continually to be noted on the skirt à straight panel cat to a point distinguishes the back, a tablier is perhaps suggested in the front. Or, again, wide hems of the material relieve the plainness of the skirt; or it is cut up at one side or both, and in thero arranged with narrow pleats, or with one in- verted pleat. In every inetunes the straight narrow affect is still to be noted; but these plests give the additional inches, to the real width, and this is a definite aid to grace of movement. The buttons are simple in form and covered with self-coloured satin or silk passe. menterie; yet they are endowed with distinction by a certain originality in their construction. Both the coat and the skirt are short. The former should be as short as individual character. istics will permit; and there are a few models in which it is curtailed until it becomes a bolero. The wojet-line also is high, but this is only suggested by the arrangemest of the panels mentioned above, or by the position of the buttons. There is a tend. oney also to cut the cost away in front but the straight sillonette is carefully retained. Collars and revers vary in shape to suit indi vidual needs; but undoubtedly the most grace. ful revers are those which describe a long line from the shoulder. It is not. rare to note the revers and coller cut in two pieces; and advant age is taken of the arrangement to introduce u different material for the latter. In this wAY A woman whose taste inclines to a note of bright- ness on a dark dress or of contrust ons light one may find it here in brusade, or in one of the rich tinselled tapestries, Or perhaps in souse Eastern embroidery, Again, colour is successfully introduced by a waistcoat which may also be of brocade, cr tapestry, or am- broidery. I have, for instance, seen a graj satin coat opening over a waistcoat of rose- coloured satin, brocaded with gold and silver, and fastened across with gold buttons, set with large round crystals the colour of sapphires; and I remember a blue satin which owed a vast- amount of its success to the scarf of Indian red laid inside the coat, and having almost the ap pearance of a waistcoat when that coat was fastened
Though everything points to satin ns the modish wear when velvet in abandoned, there is many a woman who will prefer moiré, or the. now silk, which is particularly attractive, by resson of ils thick texture and ribbed surface. This silk is woven in many beautiful shades and also in greys and blues and greens and a warm cyclamen red, shot with a second colon or with black. Such a silk has that weight in which a couturier delights when & coat is in question; and its effect is undeniably chic when well out and "taffered." It certainly aroused mittoli admiration the other day when seon in old blue shot with black and trimmed only with bands and embroideries in its own material. The smart Kitle cost was fastened with buttons and cords and decorated with any cross- way bands of the silk arranged in grenades. There was a suggestion of a crossed tanio on the skirt, produced by means of four-inch bande of the material, and the simulated underdren. was decorated with the grenados.
SERGE AND CLOTH.
Old prejudices die slowly; and there is many an Englishwoman who finds it hard to accept these sump nous silks and satine for the costums taillesr. She will then have ra course to Barges and cloths And the con turiers are prepared with many that are so finely woven and of so high a finish that she will have no dificulty in frding some whichare quite suitable for afternoon wear in town or on the Riviera. For these occasions they may be
The latter were crossed at the bust, and the coat was fastened below the waist at the left side, and here again the buttons were repeat- ed and arranged in a series of fire. A band of the materials held in the waist at the back. On this model the mod for buttons was seen at its best. Each button had a purpose and mesning, and was disposed in such a manner as to be really decorative. The whole dress spoke of a designer who had a real feeling for hire; and, though perfectly simple, it was a striking ex- ample of the advance made by the couturiers since they first introduced this type of costunic tailleur nearly a quarter of a century ago.
