The Steamers are all fitted throughout with Electric Light and have accommodation for a limited number of Saloon Passengers, and will take Cargo to all Netherlands-Indian Porta on through Bills of Lading,
But King George will also follow the penetice TJIMAHI of King Edward by presersing names in the Service which by their historic associations have TJITAROEM become part of the Navy. Thas the three other first-class battleships in the programme, one of which will be built at Devonport and the other two by contract, will be called the Centurion, Ajar, and Audacious, all of which are names intimately connected with some of the most notable nahiovements in our uaval history. In accordance with recent custom also the thron protootel oruisers provided for in the programme will take the names of cities of Grant Britain, and will be known as the Chatham, Dublin, and Sonthampton. The ship to bear the first hamo will be nit at Chatham Dockyard and the other two vessels by contract.
AN OLD AND FAMOUS NAME. The name Centurion, which is to be that of i the new battleship at Devonporf, whore a large quantity of material has been assembled along. side the building slip so that it will be possible to make good progress, with the construction, In the oldest and most famous of the names selected. The Conturion of 43 guns, which was built in 1650 at Ratcliffe, is usually regarded as the first of the name in the Navy, but there | was a small vessel of 250 tous known as the Centurion which was included among the ships provided by the City of London at the defeat of the Spanish Arinada. In 1598, moreover, & merchant vessel of the name took part in tho expedition under the Parl of Cumberland to the Wast. Indios But it is in the naval records of the 37th and 18th centuries that the 'uso is most frequently met with,
for besides the Centurion of 1650, which fought with Penn, Monk, and the Duke of York, thoro was another vessel, also a fourth- rato, which was present, at BarBear and La Hogue in 1:92, and at Malago in 1704. The best known of the Centurions, from her assasin- tion with Anson, was the vessel, of 60 guni, built at Portsmouth in 1732, which marlo the voyage round the world with that distinguished aomnander in the years 1740-44, and, after being reduced to a 50-gun ship, shared in his victory off Finisterra in 1747. Twelve yours later she was present at the expedition to Quebec, and later at the reduction of Havana. The next Cinturion, baillíu 1774 at Harwich, has a long Est of minor engagements to hor credit, and who also was present at the battle batween Roiuoy and do uirlon ou 'April 17," 1780. After two more Centuricus ind beat -built, neither of which had any war service, the name was bestowed an a battleship built at Portsmonth in 1892, which was only sold out of the Service in 1910. This lust Conturion carried Sir Edward Seymour's flag in Chinu at the time of the grant Boxer rebellion in 1900, and will always be associated with the daring minoh of the allied forco nuder tho nimiral to the relio of the Legations in Peking.

Sho played a gallant part in Hotham's, action of Hyères in 1795, and later on she served under Nelson at Naples. While in the Mediterranean also she for some time carried the flag of Lord Kaith.Shō was taken to pieces in 1815. The second Audacions' was a. twin-screw coutral battery fronclad, built at Glasgow in 1969. She is still in existence as a depôt for the training of boy artificors at Portsmonth.
THE NEW PROTECTED CRUISERS,
To turn to the names of the new protected cruisers, these appear to have been well chosen. The selection of Chatham is a very natural ona in view of the decision to build one of the pro'ooted ornisers there; Dublin is the first Trish city to be represented in the new Town- olak, which now numbers 12 vessels bailt, building, or ordered, in addition to two for the Australian Government, which will be knowva as the Melbourne and Sydney; while South.. ampton is well known as one of the most famous frigatsumes in ear naval asuals. Opportunity. has also boon taken by the construction of a sub- marine depot ship under the new Navy Estimates to revive the famora frigate name of Maidstone. Chatham as a warship name first appeared in 1691, when a fourth rater was built at the eastern dockyard, which ship was present at Barfleur in the following year, The nagie was then borno by nencesssion of small oraff, the last of which, a yacht of 74 tous, convored Nelson's body from Sheerness to Greenwich in 1805. Threo ships have been named the Dublin, all of which wore mohod of the Thames, in 1709, 1757, and 1812, pectively Only the second vessel, however, 8117 say war service. She was prosent at several ac- tions of the Seven Toara' War, and was at the capture of Gibraltar în 1781.
Southampton as a warship nome da tes from 1693, when the first vessel of the name was built at Southampton, but, as with Doblin. it remained for the second vessel to make the name famous. The Southampton, which was built in 1757, had about 14 solions to her credit. before she was wrecked off Conception Talaud in November, 1812. It is of interest to note that George III. and big Queen made several
