Mr. Astbury, in his oponing speech in the Morceni cure the other day, montioned the fact❘ TJIMAHI that Mr Marconi is only thirty-seven years of age-the same age as the Solicitor Genera. When one considera also Mr. F. E. Smith and Mr. Winston Churchill, who are also thirty- seven years old, one remembers, says the Solicitors' Journal, Disraeli's famous dogma that thirty-oven is the prime uge of the man of genins, wlüch ho illustrates in Sybil" by a maltitude of instances. In a profession where o "proniising junior" usually means a man of over forty, it is instructive to have such cases a these ouensionally brought to recollection.

FACIAL BIOGRAPHY,

A clergymas in Cape Town has received a lotter of thanks from King George V. for a biography of King Edward VII, written in 85,000 legible words,", Other biographies,

with more and with fewer words have been written," writes a correspondant from Africa to the New York Tribune," "bat this particular cus is on one great shoot which oron at a short distanes looks like an admirable portrait of the late King. The pan artist devoted three years to the making of this picture. His name is Lipkin and ho is the pastor of a Jewish con- gregation. He is a native of Russia, and

migrated to England when he was 18 years old, studied theology, and after serving in several pulpits in that country and in South America scoopted tho call to his present charg»."

Sir Herbert Beerbohmn Tree is fifty-seven. "When is an actor at his best Whon shoute he rotire? Lean fud," bo said to u Juil ropre. soutative, no difficulty in answering, those questions, He is at his host at fifty-seven, but the should ratiro at fifty-six. I feel no older now thun I did when I was thirty. I think a life of acting tends to keep people young. An acter is so often someone else he has not time to get bored with himself. It is really boredom, net pace, that kills, and we are occupied on an avor- age of three of our waking hours each day in being as unlike our real solves as possible. At present I would like to retire.

A BRITISH FLAG RECAPTURED AFTER NINETY-FOUR YEARS.

The Journal of the Royd United Service Institution gives the story of a British flag which was captured at the Battle of Quatre Brax, In that battle an attack of Frunch cavalry, was expected, and the 69th Regiment was in the act of forming square, when the Prince of Orange rode up and ordered it to.re-form column and deploy into lina, Down came a strong body of Provel cuirassiers from adjoining eaver, took the British trompa in flank, and succeeded in completely rolling-up" the regiment. fo the midst of the confusion one of the colours was carried off by the French cuirassiors. From General Donzelet, who had the flag. it pussed to his nephew, General do Ricard, and acaíu to his son, Louis Xavier do Ricard, who was keeper of the Chateau d'Azay-laRidean in the Tourin district in France. Louis gave the British and a Dutch flag to the ball porter in liquid tion of a debt, and in 1909 an English officer, Captain J. P. Jeffcock, visiting this cbatean, saw in the hall porter's lodeo the fags labelled for sale. The price asked for the two Rage was 600 fr This was at one paid. The flag measures aİY foot square. It is in a good state of preserva- tion. The Dutch flug is of no consequence, The 69th Regiment, to which the King's colour belonged, was raised in 1805 and disbanded in 1816.

A CHINESE SPORTSMAN AND HTS OUN.

Dar San Feng is a Chinese sportsman of a mercenary tondenoy, of whom Mr. Jorrocks would have said that he should rather bo "credited with kesiness than debited with ignorance" for following his favourite sport with sneb rough and unpromising weapons. "Dessrib. ing in the Field Dar Saa Feng, which, by the way, is only a nick name. F. N. D." writes:- Imagine a strong sturdy broad-shouldered ma of about 5ft 6in., with the usual high chonk bones and protruding eyes of his race, a good, honest, open countenance, and a hearty laugh. He is dressed in the usual thickly walded clothes of the coolie or anal farmer, of the inevitably indigo blue colour, with cotton sgoes and a felt cap with ear-flaps of fur, but to bo different from other people to wears the esr-flaps over his forehead and the back of his neck, with his queue lashed round the cap to keep it firmly in place. He has a little land of own, but prstars to get his living, in the winter at least, by shooting hares, which aro fairly plentiful, and selling them to foreigners."

The

gan of Dar Sau Feng is a matchlock made of welded telegraph wire; the barrel me asures 72in., and the stock, which is shaped like an old horso pistol, measures perhaps another 12in. The trigger is worked by two slips of bamboo for springs, and what would correspond to the hammer is an iron clip on a grotesque stalk, in which clip old Dar Sau Feng puts a bit of lighted incense stick whenever he views a haze aquaiting. That gau is the pride of his life, but what especially please him are two alterations carried out by the local blacksmith to his instructions. At least 2ft. have been added to the barrel quite recently, and if the welding hul been done by a blind man that would account for some inequalities and also for a good 2ln. twist in the barrel, but the proud owner stoutly maininius that now she shoots betfor than ever. "F.N.D.'s" article is well worth parasing in its entirety.
