Owing to your success with Brightenit, the Unparalleled Furniture Polish, I had begun to cherish hopes of one day seeing you a kaight, but this goes beyond my dreams You post your application to-night."

There can never have been the least doubt about the result, for Joseph was exactly the man for whom the country sighed.

1

It is not often that I have to acknowledge having made a mistake; but on leaking back san see that on two occasions. I came very near te ruining my husband's career. The first time was when I urged him to leave the chapel in which he was u Lidesman, taking round the cellooting plate, and waring people into their scate in the manner he had learnt in his seolar life, his relail gecular life, "checking the casual and encouraging the constant," as he need to say. Yes, I might have spoilt all, by trying to become "Established" too soon.

My second error was when I became cold to Joseph's whiskers, long ones, which had been considered handsome when they woTO young and brown, I hinted at razors, but my husband's star-ly manly sense was superior to my feminine intuition. Without those whiskers it is my firm belief I should have gone to my grace with no better title than "Mrs.," if

"The Lion has come when we should earnestly considor a limitation of armaments," is the con clusion which Colon 1 Gudke draws from the existing situation, for he believes that "the reatest dauger lies in the armaments them-

Aelves."

Colonel Guake describes the preparations for war which are being made by the great nations, and, with regard to England and Germany, says that "it almost seoms as if the insurance Premium against war had now reached, with both peoples, a threatening kelcht, where it is beginning to be the reverse of economical."

Hesses the danger of a confiliot, het on England and Germany. The enuity between England and Germany is, in his opinion," more powerful and dangerous than that between Gerruay and Franco.

"While Germany annoguson that sho is mak ing horself strong marely for the sake of her own interests, England," Colonel Gladke writes, "openly acknowledges that her armaments org wholly and essentially influenced by the consid. eration of Germany.

The enormous strength of the Gorman army, which is able to put almost every able-bodied man of our nation in the field as a trained war- rior, makes the anxiety of the Island Kingdom. wom not entiraly without foundation, In view

I will not deny tint I was a little disappointed that Joseph was only male a baron. Not that he will hon a word against the fairness of the No," he says, "when Mr.well, thing. perhaps I had better not muntion ames, being now official myself-whon his hat was handed wound with the little bits of paper in it marked D, M. E.-Y, or B, I might have had better Ink than to draw ont n "B"; but it was all fair enough, and unless I had got a D' you would only have been, my lady after all"

We gars a lot of thought to the choosing of our cost-of-arms, though a young man with a queer-sounding mo gave us some help. Ho said that all the Veto Peers had to have the. same supporters, two well-known politicians, propor, and the same things on the shield, a. broken felter, with 500 in Roman numerals between the two pienos; but that in tho matter of crest a little fancy might be indulged. I was proud of Joseph then. "Business frat," he sail. What I choose now will be the hall mark of Brightonit to all ages." So he has a hand holding a brush aloft, and the motto underneath (Latin) Nullam quod tetigit non ornavit," which means that Brightenit polish s everything.

This settled, and my seat for the Corauation secure, I thought it time to have a little talk with my husband, his lordship.

"Joseph," I said, "Ist mo understand it quite plainly, please, once and for all are you

"I am, Maria," he said. The King has beon pleased

Undoubtedly," he adds, neither England Dr. Germany desires war. But I must repeat it again-is the mutual distrust between the two nations, ie the competition for armament which it provokes, and the aggravation which this economic burden imposes on the people, lies the possibility of a sudden, fierce outbreak."

Colonel Gadke declares that a war between "It would be the greatest scourge that could the Germanic rations would be a catastrophe. afflict manklad."

But fashion has ways of wiping out one iudis erotion by inventing another, and the hobble" looks like being succended by a freak which has very little more to recommend it. A Paris Uostamier. M. Poiret, has invented a "harem skirt," which proves on closer acquaintance to be nothing but a revival of our ancient friend, the "bloomer. He trumpets the virtues of his "invention," of course, on the score of health, ease, adaptability, stylishness, and praca. POSTAGE STAMPS IN ROLLB,

A FOSSIBLE REFORM NEXT YEAR,

A possible postal reform of the future in Great Britain is the sale of stamps in rolls instead of sheets--obviously a more convenient form for public uso. Mr. F. 8. Cripps, who has for some years advocated this, wrote on Decem. bor 19 to the Postmaster-General, saying:

"An enormous amount of time would be sared in business offloss over stamping letters if atamps were sold in ribbons instead of in sheets, the Tibbons being round a reel, which could be held in the haud and the stamps taken off ringly. These reels could either be threaded on a carrier fixed on the wall or front of desk where the latter stamping takes place, or bold in the the pala-of the band

"Where hundreds of letters have to be stamp- ed in a short space of time it would prove a great boon, and the public generally would, I feet sare, appreciate the advantages of fearing stamps off singly from a ribbon justead of having to tear them out of a sheet. The stampa would then only need perforating on the two. sides and not on the top and bottom. The Coronation Year would seem to be a fitting opportunity for introducing this novelty to the public, and it could be applied the first time to the new stamps.

"Of course, stomps could also still be sold in sheets as heretofore. I would suggest that the reals be made up in reels of ls., 2, 6s, and 10s. upwards. Every shilling's worth could be marked off with a blank, on which could be printed the number of shillings' worth still remaining on the reel."

There came a prompt reply in return stating: "Sir,--I am directed by the Postmaster- General to inform you that the question of issning, postage stamps in rolls is already under bonsideration. Soms weeks will, how over, elapse before any definite information on the abject can be furnished."

That seems to indicate that the idea has found favour in official eyes.
