SPORTING NOTES.

Three defeats in eight days, involving & drop from 100 per neot. to 50 per cent, has been hy unfortunate experience of the KOTLI, who until then held the best position in the Cricket League competition. Now they dome second, following the R. E. and Departmentals who lead with 65 per cent.

Kowloon had an easy win over Police on Saturday, but they are likely to have more difficulty to-day in disposing of the men from the county of broad acres. R. E. and Craig- ongower is another interesting match, and if the latter shape as well as they did last Saturday against the Yorkshires they should prevent the R.E. from improving their percentage.

-NEW TAXATION IN MACAO. Our Macau correspondent informs us that the Senado (Municipal Contoil) now has a deficit of $12,000, and that at a meeting Fold this week the President proposed that, towards covering this, a tax should bo put upon private rioksbas The imposition of new taxes of any kind at the present time, our correspondent anys, is a serious mistake, and can only serve to assist the exodus of the population which has recently boon taking place. Instead of levying now taxes the Senado should go in for retrenchwunt, should see that all money collected goes into the Treasury, and should put the tax-gathering officials on fixed salaries instead of paying them a percentage on the money Bollected. If the Senado in seeking rolief from its financial embarrassment would make a thorough investigation into the collec tion of licence fees for public rickshas, street -stalla, and the hundred and one other things in respect of which fees are collected, and make the obvious reforms which such an investigation would reveal to be necessary it is highly probable to say the least, that the Sands would quickly place itself in a position to do without farther imposta. What should be aimed at is a redno. tion of taxation if Macao is ever again to become a prosperous colony.
