THE PHILIPPINES CARNIVAL.

Who has not heard of the Carnival By that is meant The Carnival-in othor words, the Philippines Carnival, which is held every year in Maulla, which during the-sight days of its duration is a stream of light, a blaze of glory, where pleasure runs riot and theatrests are filled with a rollicking, good-natured and fan-loving populace, which has cast care to the winds and settled down to enjoy to the fullest extent the great fiests of the Philippines.

there, too,

Certainly no ono in the Philippines, до matter where he might be, from Zamboanga to Aparri, has failed to hear of the big flesta. And all along the China coast,

are those who have revelo in the delights of the Carnival, for hand reds of them hare taken advantage of an oppor- tunity to see the biggest show over held in any part of the Orient, sud one of the biggest in the world.

The Carnival has had visitors from almost every part of the globe, and its fame has gone forth, spreading year by your. And each year more people come from foreign countries to the Pearl of the Ortent which dous its gala dress every Fahrmary and holds within its portals a veritable treasure house of things wonderful, laughable, interesting and instructive.

There is hardly anything else like it in the world. No community has ever combined in such happy union the many and variel festaros which ono may see and enjoy at the Philippines Carnival.

The firat Carnival was held in 1903; big as it was, it was surpassed in grandeur by the next, And year by year it grows until it is admit elly only a question of time until Manila will become the Mecca for those seeking pleasure and instrac- tion in the Orient,

From the frat the Carnival was a notable success. The first was a big show the fame of which quickly spread. One of the big features of the first Carnival was the hippodrome perfor- mance, long to be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to smo it. Combining as It did acts by representatives of all nations, quaint national dances, wire and trapeze perfor mers, wild west, daring feats of horsemanship, and a myriad of other attractions, including splendid exhibition drill and manoeuvres by the Army, all together in one show.

All who saw it pronounced it superior to any large circus they had ever seen. Owing to con- ditions peonliar to the time, it was said, and it is donkfless true, that in no other place "could such a stupendous show have been given,

At the time the first Carnival was given it was not the intention to repeat it, but it was such a signal success that it was then and thore decided to make the Philippines Carnival a per- manent fixture, and to give it every your... -

When King Carnival is upon the throne, all Manila does homage to him, and the city is as much bis as are the domains of the Czar. He is monarch of all he surveys Throughout the evening hours thousands of his subjects, maskod, way and reveling, throng the streets and Carnival City, the home of His Majesty, King Carnival.

The second Carnival was another pronounced succes, and as the fame of the former Carnival had spread, there were thousands of people from foreign countries present in the city to enjoy the big show.

|

The hippodrome featurs next year will include the greatest circus sver shown in the Orient, not excepting that featureofthe first Carnival. There will be in the circus proper 50 horses with 50 riders, male and female, 40 olowns, 38 acrobats, and woman obariots and other hippodrome events.

Peanuts, rai lemonade, etc., will be sold on the Buntoke, the local version of the Midway Plaisance, where one may see "El Hombre Primitivo, freaks, side shows, theatres, and all of the usual smuromonte, besides some brand new oneer

BUTTER SIDE UP,

*My son," mid the Demagogue, as he was helped into his fur coat, the art of life lies in knowing which side your bread is buttered." "True, father," replied the lal, clutching in his hand a ten-frane piece an sunt had given him hoping he woull think it was half a sovereign,

The fond parent dismissed his Swiss butler, and with a glance at the weather-glass took his wife's umbrella from the rock.

"It might rain," he explained, "sud wo do not want to get wet, do we, my son ?"

Where are we going, father" the lad asked ingenuously.

"It is near to Christmas," said his father benignly, "and I purpose a visit to the shops. Doubtless you wish to give your little sister some trifling gift."

The boy was about to reply when there passed them a gentleman whose either hand was held by laughing children. The Demagogue frowned.

Why frown, father said the Obervant One.

"Yon mw that,” said his father, pointing in the direction of the happy group. That is a Peer and his children--faugh! You may hold your nose, my lad, until they pass."

Mafled by the enforced act, yet still question. ing. the lad asked: What have they dons, father?"

Angry, yet smiling, the father answered

Work has already been begun on the Carnt. val grounds, upon which a little later on will rise Carnival City, and during the two months Intervening between now and the opening of the big show, no paine or expense will be spared to make it the best show that it is possible to pro duce in the Philippine Islands. For what the islanda can do in this line, one has but to remember the last two Carnivals.
