The New Year has dawned quietly and Cruigengower those who have taken the occasion solemnly are no doubt stroggling with themselves in an effort. to keep the good resolutions formed at the im. pressionable period.
The Criminal Cessioun has, possessed more than ordinary interest for the British commanity this wask. The man who has gained such notoriety under the name of John Grant now !passes from the public gaze, and the police should be happy in having at length get rid of a man who gave them considerablo trouble. The other cause celebre was the diamond case, which auded in the discharge of tho defendant, though the Chief Justice agreed that it was a case that should have come before the jury.
POLICE, CIVIL SERVICE.
Their hopes,
Bravo the Polico! Perseverasco bas at last! been rewarded, and the custodians of the peace were victorious on Batarday in their League match against the Civil Service. The latter team took the man of the force too cheaply, and apparently expected to carry" off honours without a full team. however, were frustrated by the excellent batt ing of that voteran pertaman, Inspector MoHardy, who hit up 40 runs before being bowl- helped by Bird. The rest of the team was disposed of for a total of 25 rane, and prospects of a win wers anything but bright. But when the Servica men want to the wickets they were paralysed by the trandling of Kerr and Hoggarth. The former's lightning-like deliveries were treated "blocked," respect and sedulously with The latter's appeared more playable, and the batamen struck out at them, only to learn too late that they were tricky and destructive- Hoggarth did the “hat trick," and seven of the Service wiskete want down before his trundling for a total of 22 vans. were as follows:-
Without being a purist, one cannot regreting the aspect of life in Hongkong which has been under the limelight during the two big trials at the Criminal Sessions set wook. It revealed a condition of affairs which is not vory satisfactory from either the moral or the administrative points of view, and if some were made to ourtail the drinking which seems to be such a prominant fos turbo the temimonde in the Colony it would probably be found that the vice associated with it would be lessened. Our Colonial Secretary has done good work in this direction already. Has be reached his limit?
The. Govorimont is understood to be par- tionlarly keen on affecting economies wherever possible, but it looks as if they have been taken by surprise, or have not looked alioad in being left with a suits of offices racout at the Supreme Court while they are paying rent for offices in the next block. The utilisation of the Crown Solicitor's Offices as a meeting room for the Reception Committee for the Crown Prince' visit can hardly be described as remunerative.

The fire fiend has been particularly busy dur. ing the last few days. In one instance a toll of nine lives was exacted, and. in another a steamer was almost completely gutted. This makes us think senin of our fire brigades Without doubt they are well manned, but they need to get to the soone of à fire in loss time than it usually takes them. Something speedier than coelios is wanted, and the resour con of the Colony are not so overtaxed that they cannot procare some appliances which can "get there"
more speedily than the twelve or four- teen-man engines:
Comment has frequently been made on the habit which has become very noticeable in Hongkong of people entering a place of ontor- tainment after the commencement of the per- formance to the annoyance of those already sented and the artistes. on the stage. On Wednesday night s rebuke was administered

We hare scos quite a number of Viceroys pass through Hongkong on their way to assumo their responsible positions in Canton, and in most cases they have aroused hope not only on the part of foreigners but of the Chinese them. selves that they would be able to promote the progress of the Two Kwang Provinces. In selecting His Excellency Chang Ming Ki the Throne has shown a departure from eustom by appointing a very young man so far as such positions go, in that respect following rather the lead of our American friends than of Europe. Certainly where great enterprises Bud great undertakings have to be ac- complished the man for the task is one who combines the energy of youth with the discre- tion-of-experienos. We also look to the Vloeroy to do great things.
The abolition of gambling in Hongkong and now in the Two Kwang provinces must make for better resuits among the Chinese in the South. Many people will in consequence of the now enactment be deprived of their livelihood in Kwaugting, but their loss is others gain, and no plaos will gain more than Macao, whose gambling monopoly is likely to be rendered more valuable by the suppression of the practice elsewhere.
In one respect Austria in the leading nation in Europe. The Austrian Minister of Com- merce has issued an order providing that all Austrian passenger ships, whose service extends beyond Gibraltar or Aden, must be fitted with wireless telegraphy apparatus. And all other European States are left to follow this example,

AN IMPORTANT CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
At Shangbai on Saturday afternoon (Decem ber 31st) on the launch taking passengers to the str. China the Custom officials made a rathor sensational seizure of pearls, said to be worth k. Tis. 300,000. The gets were said to be in possession of a foreign passenger to Hong- kong, and the searching party, in mutti, was aboard the tender when it left the wharf. O the way down river, the man was searched, but nothing was found on him. Then be wa mado to open bis gege, and one trank was found to contains pearls, which were at once taken cha of by the Customs, the owner, very crestellen and sulky indeed, being permit- ted to continue his voyage minus his valuables. As there can be no high Chinese officials or others gath" pull" interested in this ca a it looks as though the fortunato Custom's searchers have made's stake worth something, while the "informer" will be able to rotire and "liva hap pily ever after."-Shanghai Timer.

The weather conditions were admirable, and Captain Tokagawa having made sorral very short flights, a little before 8 o'clock he prepared for s serions attempt. The huge biplane was placed on the parade ground facing due west, and after aran of thirty yards made a graceful ascent to a height of about 120 feet.
