ON FIRE. THE STEAMSHIP "NORD" AGAIN
Considerable excitement prevailed in the vicinity of Kowloon Deck last night when the ery of "fire" rang out. At first it was thought in Hongkong and also in Kowloon that the ont- break had oocarred in the Dock Company's promises, but investigation proved that the fire had broken out on a steamer lying alongside The unfortunate vessel was the Nord, which had gone into dock on Saturday to undergo certain necessary repairs How the conflagration originated is not known, but shortly after half past six flames were seon to choot up from the after part of the vessel. The alarm bolis wore sounded, and the Dock Fire Brigade with engine were soon in attendance, followed Inter by the brigados from Hunghom Police Station and from Yaumati, while the fire float came on the scene in time to help the work of fighting The steamer has been carrying oil the fames.
THE FANCY DRESS BALL AT KINGSOLERE
The Fandy Dress Bail held each New Year at Kingsolere has become a prominent oront of the social season in Hongkong. This year'z Ball, which was to fifth of the series, was also the largest an the most brilliantly successful. Up- warts of 400 ladies and gentlemen wero invited, and there were very few present who were not in sucy dress. A wonderful getary of eslouring was the result, and a closer inspection of the costumes showed that originality-of idon was by no means lacking. At 10.15 p.m. there was un inspection parade, or grand promenade, led by Mr. F. Bovington, the Indefatigable Hon Secretary, with Mrs. Donison. Starting in the hall, the procession went round the dining room into the ball again and then formed fours, Adsh light photographs buing taken by Mee Chong Balloting followed to determine which, in the opinion of the gathering, was the best indy's
