VEREVIEWS,
A Village Community?... By HotE. DAWLISH.
Hongkong: Kelly & Walsh, Limited.
This book is a sequel to 's fascinating story entitled: “A Secretary of Legation, well. written book with a Far Eastern setting. A masond or third edition of this book was review- ed in these columns, it may be a couple of years ago. So much impressed was the reviewer with the book that over sinos, he his boon en the look-out for books by Hopa Dawlish In the judgment of the reviewer, Hopa Nawlish on the strength of this one book took high rank song writem of flotion, and it soomed strange that so little had been heard of him. Obriously be was a man who know the Far East, and anybap was a resident in these parts, but peither the current nor past issues of the Direc tory contained the name Hope Dawlish. Nor did search Who's Who," and other referenos broke of that elem provide enlightenment; he remained an observe author until some for weeks ago, when the hint was given to tha reviewer that, perhaps, Hupe Dawlish was, after all, but a nom de plume, ap there was added the suggestion, by easyho svidoutly knew, that this Retitions natu oofüred the identity of a prominent #gure in the life of Hongkong. Since then another book by tha] same author has malo its appearancs entitled, "A Village Comiranity," and a careful reading of this book conrorta doubl into certainty as to the authorship. The village comomity is in Surrey, and life in this small world iseleverly delineated. Among the loading characters in the book are members of the Squire's family, the village politician of Bo- cialist hues, the benevolent old udctor who hesi | nettled there after many years' service as a ship's surgoon, and incidentsbly Dels in Grip- per, the lawyer from a neighbouring, town, into whose grip the village politician ultimately comes through thinking too sanch of politica and too little of business. Three love stories onda tragedy are interwoven. It is a delightful': and a clover book, which we would cordially re- commend quite apart from the interest which 'naturally attaches to it as the production of a local author..-
