SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY,
HOW MT, M KINLEY MAT BE EXPLORED Mountain climbing by balloon is a new form of sport that seems to have scientific promise, and mountain explorers are not likely to neglect much longer the aid offered by balloons in mak ing observations on diffoult peaks. In the Alps balloon journeys are already common. A Freach noronaut was blown across the Maritime Alps in a storm 60 or 70 years ago, but the first planned mountain voyage was made in October 1898, by Speltern, who crossed the Diablerets, 10,660 feet high in the Berness Alps. Sines then many of the Alpa have been crossed, most of the successful ascents having been made, however, from points within the mountains. It was not until November, 1905, that Usuelli and Crespi ascending from Milan, passed over Mont Blanc (16,000 feet) at an altitude of 22,300 feet, and landed wear Aix-les-Enins, thus winning the prize offered by the Queen Dowager Mangherita of Italy for a complete balloon crossing of the high Alps. In the last two years several stable trips have been made. On June 29, 1908, Viòlor de Beauclair and two companious ascend- ed from the Eigergletscher station of the Jurgfran railway, and 20 hours later lauded at Stressa on Lake Maggiore, after a passage over" the most picturesque part of the Alps, including Captain Kuaixel, having. arrived, Cou-seven or eight peaks more than 13,000 feet high signees, of Cargo are hereby informed that their A later mountain fight covered more than

The next attempt was based upon a super feial familiarity with the ordinary system of accounts. At the head of the two columus lie put the magic and macroannot signs, "Dr." and C" (Langator. He thought he was all right when he had learned to write that. But he soon realised that he was in a more distress. ing position than before. He was faced with the astounding fact that everything he bought and had was Dr." and everything he sold and lost was "Cr." (Langhtor.)
As at that time he was beying more than hə was selling, his position was pitiable. He twisted the accounts about, mixed them up in an inextricable mass, and then separated them into arbitrary classifications, Bat the only result was that those two presiding genit of a protracted nightmare nearly drove him mad. (Laughter.) Instead of being organs of light, they became dark fiends of torture- Dr. was a threatening spectre, while Cr-the deceitful Cr.pursued him through the night with its long tale. (Loud laughter.)
Suolt, agais, was the result of the light of Nature shining through the methium of a University education.
