Ent I was Tory pleased that shareholders then present, expressed appreciation of the valuable services which have boon rendereil to this com- pany by the directors and I endorse every word that was spoken on that occasion. My own so nection with this company dates from 1880, the year of its formation, so that I am well acquainted with its history, and the progress of the asbestos trade generally. It must be remembered that asbestos is used for engineering purposes was unknown bofore 1871, in which year it was first manufactured by a Glasgow company into a form of packing for use in the comparatively low pressure marine and other steam engines of that time. That company and two other conceras wore merged in the United Asbestos Company (Limited) in 1880, so that we may properly claim, as we always have claimed, to be the oldest asbestos company in existenes. As I have said, our origin was Glasgow. We have much North British blood in our veins, for many woll-known Scotchmen are still largely interested in this company as shareholders. We had early and serious troubles to contend with, and in the case of a new concern carrying on extensive experiments to improve the manufacture of a natural and incombustible mineral fibre like Italian and Canadian asbestos, this was inevitable. Many thousands of pounds were spent in machinery which time after time had to be discarded and broken up, with the result that

Our director of the combined company, and that it directors and principal shareholders, however, backed up the ungement, and in a few more was kept to the same broad policy as that on years losses were wiped out and we reached a which both had hitherto been carried on.
