The rain seems lang in coming" this year. We have had on cocasional drizzle, but we need a downpour safloit to soften the ground and help fill the reservoirs. Overcoats were fashion. able for a day or two this week, and then without warning the thermometer want up to vnty No wonder colds are being dispensed pretty lavishly.
The social parity orasado has commenced again in Hongkong. The evil complained of line been allowed to attain each dimensions as to cause a real nuisance, and one which interferes with the liberty, of respectable women folks. Of course a good deal of nonscase will be talked on the subject as usual, but the authorities might be forced to adopt a stronger attitude towards the offenders than they do at present.
The proceedings at the meeting of share.. holders of the Hongkong and Whanipo Dock Company did not afford cheerful renting to those Insucially interested in the concern, but very soon afterwards a demand set in for shares, and it became known that negotiations were in progross for a working arrangement between the two private dock concerns in the Colony whereby they cease their ruinous com petition with each other. Consquently the Dook Company's shares have gone up during the past ten days from $50 to 872.
I see that Hongkong is to follow suit in the matter of taking the oath in court. The form just introduced in England is to be applied in Hongkong. As regards expenses, I am sorry to say that they were higher. We have to thank our Marine Sup erintendant, Mr. A. G. Gordon, for substan. thal sonomics, which he effected in the cost of repsire and renewals, but although we savod there and on a few other smaller items Loureiro (Aeting Manager), H. Pinckney, we suffered from the increased pries of coal, while the cost of storedorage at Manila is also up by about Pa, 5,000.00, but that is natural owing to moze cargo having been handled at that end. The figure at which the steamers slanul in the books is not a high one, but some allowance must be made in future for deprecia- tion, and next year, if we cannot do so out of profits, we must fall back on the Insurance Account, which now has over $72,000.00 at its credit We are running a good big line our selves, but by doing so we get the balance done by underwriters at lower terms than they would accept if we reduced the value of the steamers, The Accounts require no comment or explans tion, all the items being much the same as before. As to the future, I said last year we must not be disheartened, because we were passing through a cycle of bad times, and it looks now as if there were better time shead for all of us. Trado generally has much improved, and the big crops all over the world must have a good effect on shipping. Last year the total imports into the United Kingdom amounted to £624,740,517, or £31,787,030 better thes 1908, while exports were £1275,620 better at a total of £378,379,444 and this is a genuine improvement as prices of commodities were low for the most part of the year, December showed

A correspondent, noticing that a Bill is before the Legislative Council for the purpose of giving statutory authority to the Governor in-Council to require "any Jadge or other Public Officer to retire from the Publio Service of the Colony at any time after he attains the age of sixty years," asks me if there are any such officers now in the public service of Hong- kong. A glance through the Civil Service List for 1910 reveals that there are two-one 65 years of age, the other 63. One, I understand, in retiring next year. Next to these two cames the Chief Justics, who will be 58 in April,
The amendment to the Liquor Ordinance jast presented to the Legislative Council makes one marvel at the working of the mind of the Secretary for State, who has refused to allow the Governor of Hongkong to have the liquor nooded for Government House imported free of duty. This concession was made expressly by the Council, who apparently realised that it was only fair to do so, otherwise it meant the amount of the entertaiment allowance granted to His Excellency being reduced to the extent of the duty on the liquor consumed.

A-story of the race meeting has just reached me, and though it is somewhat belated it is too good to let it be lost. A gentleman had taken a ticket in the cash sweepstake as he thought for the first race of the afternoon, and when the number of the ticket was chalked up he felt so happy at the prospect of the money that was coming to him that he shook hands with him soll. He went to the office, got the ticket endorsed "Please pay,”, and was conating dollars in his hand when the chief clerk discovered that
the ticket was for the second race and net for the first. But he was a philosopher. He only said a little word with a big initial, and bought another ticket.
Literary and Debating Societies do not seem to Bourish in Hongkong in these days. The Odd Volumes Society was for many years an important institution in the Colony, but it has not been heard of now for quite a long time. If I remember rightly, it is three Vessons agd since lecture was delivered under its anspices. A year or two ago the YMCA started Parliamentary. Mr. H. PINCKNEY said:-Although holding only a few shares, he was asked by a friend in London who wasan original shareholder to look after his interest. In his opinion the best thing to be done was to wind up the Bank if the Bank was not in a position to carry of a regular exchange and banking business. To his per sonal knowledge the Bank had often refused profitable business owing to their having no liquid funds. All the capital appeared to be looked up in unprofitable loans. He did not favour sloan bank, an in his opinion the share- holdura contd employ their own money to better advantage.

From the kick-off Read and Sullivan enter tained the spectatora to an exhibition of dribbling and short passing which enlminated in Read Leating Ken. Goldenborg added two more and Mead one before half-time came with the score: Club, 5; Naval Yard, 1,
From the recommencement the Yardors tried hard to reduce the lead, but without avail, Barlow working like a Trojan in kooping Road and Sullivan in check. The second goal for the Yarders was the result of a run by Crowley and Coombes being contred to Raud, the isfter converting. An unexpected goal for the Club was scored by Bloombe trying to trapa ahot from Kilby, and the ball glancing off his foot into the net. With about ten minutes to go the Yarders took matters in earnest, and before the whistle haul sounded for time Rood and Sullivan had added four goals, making the flual score: H.R.E.C., 6; N.T.F.C, 6,
