WATCHING THE BOILER,
Of 112 bailer explosions in the Gorman Empire in 1900 to 1907, not less than 65 were due to low water and 11 resulted from excessivo steam pressure. Fations safety devices have been brought out lately, to prevent risk trops these causes. The new warning apparatus of a Berlin firm consists of two concentric tabes, attached to the top of the boiler, the anter one being closed at the top and extending downward in the boiler to the lowest per mimible low-water level, and the inner ono closed at the bottom-reaching a little lower than the other and rising with open top some- what higher than the outer tube. A spiral tube joins the two. Two wires from the inner tube connoot to an electric boll circuit, and a fusible plug is placed just over a carity containing the onds of the wires. On opening an air-cock the pressure in the boiler fills the tubes with water, which romains below boiling point. If the water falls below the tabos, hot atsam rises, melts the ping, and the metal connecte the wires, sounding an alarm in time to avoid explosion.

AL SCIENCE REBUILDING TURKEY,
The taak of restoring fertility to Asiatic Turkey is a probable opportunity for enterpris- inganghours and supitalists. The land, especially between the Eaprates and Tigris rivers, formed one of the earliest grain-folds, but has been abandoned through the diesy of the ancient irrigation works. Some years ago. Sir William Willcox, a British engineer, pro- posed a system of reclamation by irrigation and flood protection works The now Turkish Goverment sa become interested, and has made a small appropriation, but stems to be unable to raise sullicent money. The entire ocat would be $30,000,000, though a preliminary project has been planned that calls for only one ifth of the mount. If a grant is made to private contractors, as sooms likely to be done, the profits during term of years to be the payment for completing the undertaking, it is estimated that the grain-crops would rield 16 to 20 per cent, ou the cost.

Then, again, the salvage of ships that run shore, which is a possible accident to any big battleship, is a far more difficult problem. The most important of all reasons, how- ever, lies in the fact that few of the world's dry docks can handle any larger ships than are being built to-day. brought against William Butler Wright, who was represented by Mr. J. C. E: Douglas
Mr. Wright stated that the writ in this case sued the provincial court at Canton in Nayamber last year, and was transferred to the Supreme Court hore by order of his Lordship shont the end of the year. In the meantime there had been several interlocutory applica tions, and today was the return day. The writ was specially endorsed under rule 100, the claim being for money received by the defendant as the plaintiff's agent for the use of the plaintiff. The following par- tionlars were given on the writ:To 8200unt 0 2230 cmU O SALAD O CERTO O GRES É ressived-14th September 1908-85,000; 30th December 1908, 813,009; 1st February 1909, $4,000; 27th November, 1907, to 31st August, 1909, 852,624.04; making a total claim for $74,624.42, with $300 for coats. The claim was for a specific sana liquidated sam, payable on an implied contrast. In respect of the first three amounts specified on the writ the defendant was convicted for wrongful conversion in October last. With regard to the fourth item a detailed socount bad been supplied. An affidavit had been filed by Mr. McNaughton, in the employ of Messrs, Lowe, Bingham, & Matthews, who, in conjunction with Mr. Williams, of the sama firm, had audited the railway accounts. Counsel believed that there was no defence to the action, and ander rule 100 lis applied for judgment.
Mr. Douglas said Mr. Wright, plaintiff's consol, bod already agreed to two postpone ments, and he was very reluctant to ask for a further postponement, but he had not yet received an affidavit, made by defendant, from Hongkong. He had con tologram frora Hongkong stating that the afdarit was sent on the 15th iust, in which case it should arrive on Bunday or Monday by the English mail
His Lordship, said he could not at present give judgment against defendant, but he would allow the case to stand over, Mr. Douglas, of course, paying the costs of the adjourament.
Bie. Douglas remarked the plaintiff bad filed this action in Canton and wanted it tried in Shanghai, whereas the defendant was at presont in gaol at Hongkong..
His Lordship enquired why the action was not started in Hong song.
Mr. Wright replied that he did not know, unless it was for the convenience of the authorities.
His Lordship Why is it more convenient for you to sue in Canton than in here than in Hongkong?
