THE NORTH POLE “OFFERED" TO PRESIDENT-TAFT
Beverly, Sept. 8. Commander Peary has telegraphed as follows: President Tuft
I have the honour to ploes the North Pole at your disposal."
Mr. Taft has replied:
Thanks for your interesting and gener ous offer. I do not know exactly what I could do with it. I congratulate you singers. ly on inring achieved, after the greatest. effort, the object of your trip. I sincerely hope that your observations will contribute substantially to scientific pledge: lavendied lustre to the name of American." -Beyler

gives Dr. Cook the lie.
Dr. Cook states that he two Fakino companions knew thair position throughout the journey and performed a "dance of aragery on roaching the "Big Nail" (the Fele). Commander Peary says that the two Eskimos love informed him that they went
m61 no distance north. Other of thefe tribe oorroborate them.
Dr. Cook's alloged rate of travel over the Polar ice-fifteen milos a day-is declarad to be all bat impossible by the majority of Arctic explorers.
Dr. Cook's chief previous-feat, the ascent of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, is declared by American newspapers, to have been achieved-if it ever was achieved-alone and without witsosses. It is not officially acknowledged by the United States Surrey.
Dr. Coolgays that his Polar expedition was the result of a suddeú turpiration
Dr. Cook has admitted that he had is suspicion that Peary might have reached the Pole, and I was more than eager to vesah civilisation in order to publisk my regnite"
Dr. Cook's methods of “taking observÉ- blons at the Pole" is declared to be vaineless by Mr. Bernacchi, the physicist of the Discovery Antarctic expedition.
According to Dr. Cook's account of the provisions consumed on the last dash, their total weight must have been for greater than three men and twenty-six. dogs could pull,
Dr. Cook has not reported a single new fact or observation as the result of having reached the Fole.
Those who arge the case for the defence base their arguments on the unhesitating acceptance of Dr. Cook's story by the Danish Court and publio, sud by some Danish scientists, on the statement that Dr. Cook luas a good record; on the manner in which he withstood cross er amination in Copenhagen; and on the belief that his promised book will clear up every uncertainty..

Two shirtling messages from Commander Ponyy discrediting Dr. Cook's claims to be the discoverer of the North Pole reached here today The Bret magage is dated from Indian Harlour, Labrador, and read as follows:
Melville E. Stone,
Associated Press, New York.
I have nailed Stars and Stripen to North Pola. This authoritative and correct.
Cook's story should not be taken too seriously, The two Exkinics who accpm.. panied him say he went no distance north and not out of sight of land.
triba: Other members of
corroborate
their story.
The second message is addressed to Mrs. Peary, who leaves Portland, Maine, to-morrow, for Sydney. It says :
Delayed by gale. Don't worry about Cook. I have him nailed." Meet ma Sydney
BERT
In a third message to Mr. Bridgman, 850 relars of the Peary Arctic Club, Commander Peary told of meeting Mr. Harry Whitney, who, according to Dr. Cook, is in possession of kis (Cook's) recordų,"
PROUD OF ERARY," Aoxording to the New York. Herald. Dr. Cook has sent the following message to Presi dant Taft
"Proud of Peary.-Cook."
He also sent the following message som
Kindly convey to: Commander Peary my hearty congratulations upon his success. Victory is now surely all American Glad he has woo, as the records are better than one.
His work over a new route has addi vaine. It will clear another large un known space and add an epoch-making contribution to the annals of Polar ex- plorations.-COOK,
In a further message to the Herald Dr. Look says:
I have promised to submit my facts, figures, and instruments to the actor Magnificna and the Faculty of the Univer sity of Denmark, as a body of scientists thoroughly familiar with Polar exploration." I know I am right, and am confident their verdict will sustain the accuracy of my observations.
"I decline to be held responsible for the varying stories of my interviews with cor- respondents at Copenhagen.
While retaining the highest respect for courageous explorers who are unconvinced, I decline to engage in a controversy with them, their friends, or members of their families."
CASE AGAINST. DR. COOK. What is Dr. Cook Is he, aki a London paper, the greatest traveller the world his ever known; or is he the boldest imposter who ever sought to hoax the civilised world! Those who balieve that the latter is the correct descrip- tion ontline the case for the prosecution as follows:---
He branght no records, or observations back with him to Copenhagen, or, if he did has not once produced them.

PURE MILK FOR BABIES.
The Allenburys Foods.
[167-722
The "Allenburys" Milk Foods are the necrest approach to maternal milk that science has yet achieved. They provide, when used as directed; a complete diet for Infants: promote vigorous health and growth; make firm flesh and strong bonesį and are so graduated as, to give the maximum quantity of nourishment the child is capable of digesting according to age. Dinerhoea, digestive and stomach troubles are avoided when these foods are given, as by the method of manufacture, they are absolutely devoid of noxious germs, and therefore safer than, and superior to, cow's milk, especially in hot weather..
The Milk Foods are-made instantly by the simple addition of liot water only, and are alike suitable for the delicate infant and the child in robust health.
