SMACKING THE PIG. ROYAL INSTITUTION LECTURE ON SATAGE SECRET SOCIETIES.
Sonze of the strange customes and paromomies connected with the secret societies existing la the Banks Islands, Melanesia, wore described by. Dr. W. H. R. Rivers at the Royal Institution.
Each village, he said, possessed a clab house, which was divided into partitions, each of which represented the rank or degree of an organisa tion. The candidate who wished to be initiated into the lowest had first to go through the care mony of smacking the pig. A pig was brought into the village, men with conch shells blew three long two interrupted blasts, and after the candidate had smacked the animal it became the property of the man who was introducing him.
to
next stage in the ceremony was the collection to 60 fathoms of shell money, and the adopted was for the candidate to give fathom to each of ten friends, who, when a few days later he requested repayment, gave him a couple of fathoms apiece. By repeating this practise be raised the necessary money and the elaborate and peculiar ceremony of initiation followed, all the people in the village who were uninitiated having to leave for the time being.
man could betong had
to the next join a ghost of secret society, of which, said Dr. Rivers, there was a large number, and each of which had a lodge in a clearing in the bush. After the preliminary ceremony came a period of seclusion. It was necessary, oboorved the speaker to obtain all the money possible before the initia- tion, because if the candidato did not du so he was collect the fall amonat, and it was not allowed to go out of the lodge until he had managed to said that in the old days there were many cases of people spending the rest of their lives there. (Laughter.)

One of the rules relating to the period of seclusion forbade the candidate to wash or make his bed, and he also had to undergo trimis of patience. In the end there was a big feast, at which he was acquainted witli the secret of the werry-warry noise. This noise, kupt up all night, prevented sleep and warned the nintiat ed, who regarded it as something mysterious and awful, not on say account to stir out of doors. The candidate, expecting to have a great mystery revealed, found that the noise was made by rubbing the end of a stick against a stone. To obtain the proper rhythm, how. ever, years of practice were required, and the man who produced a wrong sound had to pay a heavy fine.

Mr. James Cantlie, lecturer at the London tool of Tropical Medicine, writes as follows with reference to the lecture on "The Campaign swainst Mintaria" delivered at the Royal Institution by Major Ronald Rea
*Major Boss, in his enthusiasm for the public health, has inflicted many men, especially the seniors, in many countries for their pathy and igantance; but to most people the wouder is
n that in so short a race of time pretical benes should be already so pronouncedly in evidence. The difficulties of overcoming the obstacles to a more rapid development of malaria prevention is partly in the personal factor of those in charge of a colony and it is at the same time largely question of finance. There can be no doubt that the announcement that the bite of a mosquito was the sole cause of malaria infection was received with doubt or disbelief by many of the older medical men practising in the tropics. During the past ten years, however, the Schools of Tropical Medicine in London and Liverpool have been notively teaching the most recent developments of tropical pathology and hygiene to mortical men engaged a the
practice
of their profession in the tropice, that tha numbers availing themselves of the teaching is not insignificant may be gathered from the fact that 1,000 medical men have been thus trained the London School of Tropical Medicine alone
"Again, we might be inclined to believe from Major Ross, statements that but little had been done, or, was being done, by the Colonial Office authorities in England, or by the Governors of solantes,
to check the ravages of malaria and of other scourges of the tropics. Ever since Mr. Chamberlain took up the question of the of malaria in the Crown Colonies of vention the Empire and dealt in a statesmenliks Fashion with the health of their peoples, the Colonial Office has been keenly active in the matter. The per which they have managed to instil into the Colonial Office authorities, by the enthusiasm whole of the service, have caused sanitary work, including malaria prevention, to occupy a formoet place in the minds of the Governor and Council of

"Professor Ross has shown that isclatod spots enn be freed from malaria at a moderate expenditure, but the problem of dealing with a to render them large tracts of country malaria free has not yet been solved.
I learn that it is proposed to hold in London in the autumn of next year a Universal Roos Congress which will treat of the relations of western races and nations with esetern and other races and nations. The object of the con gress is stated to be the discussion of the larger view to racial issues in the light of modern knowl edge and the modern conscience with encouraging a good understanding, friendly feel- ings and hearty co-operation among races and nations. The preliminary circular announces that political issues of the hour will be subordinated to this compehensive end in the firm belief that when once mutual respect is established, difficil. will be sympathetically ap proached and readily India it may seem that this belief is some what too optimistic, but there is every reason why the proposals for holding the Congress should The be welcomed in all parts of the world. provisional programme includes snob subjects as the meaning of race, constitutional cultural development, contact between civilisation, the modern conscience, and positiva suggestions. The proposals are at present in a very elemen tary stage, but as the preliminary arrangemente are in the bands of Mr. Gusta Spillel, upon whom rasted the greater part of a organiza- tion of the Moral Instruction Congress last year, there in good rasson to hope that the. gathering may be successfully carried through.
