A new theory of gold bearing alluvial de- posits has been worked out by M. Fianz, Fench geologist. It has been usually assumed that gold sulphide and telluride in the earth's central nucleus have been dissolved in hot springs and afterward deposited with gala- tinous silies, and that erosion of the anriforous quartz voirs thus formod has given the alluvial state containing metallic gold. This proves to be true in some coses. More aften, however the gold in the deposits is associated with basic rocks, like diebase or diorite instead of with silica, and ressons are found for concluding that in general, heavy eruptive rocks have EL 2,200,517,37 (£183,376)ought up some of the metallic gold from the undetected arrivals of aliens were far more

Drinking tumblers made of ice were first tried in Holland, where they are considerably used in hot weather. They are made by pour ing a little water into a metallic outer mold, introducing a waileentered inner form, and plunging the whole into a freesing mixture. The early tendency to break at the bottom has been remedied by shaping the molds so that the bottom is made thick and curved upward. On taking from the mold, the cup is given an external wrapper of paraffined paper for pro- tection in handling, and is then placed in cold storage until wanted for usOT

The automatic gas lookont of Arnold Philip and Lonis L Steele, twp British marine engineers, is designed to detect leakages of combustible vapor or gas in submarines or the confined spaces of larger vessels. The presence of gasoline vapor or dangerous gen is shown when the proportion is only a third of that required to form an explosive mixture with air. and warning is thus given in time to prevent
acoldent. The apparatus includes an electrio motor air pump, with small pipes of the vessel where oil or gas leaks are likely to occur. When the air sucked in contains any considerable amount of inflammable vapor or gas, a white light goes out and a red light is lighted, and at the eame time an electric bell is scanded, Au indicator also shows the pipe through which the contaminated nir has been drawn.

I am nathorised under the provisions of the Commonwealth Alims' Immigration Restriction Act to grant exemptions to tourists, merchants, and students desirous of visiting Australia; and have found that many of the applications made to me' were all humbug, simply attempts to evade the Commonwealth laws.
